Conventional restaurants? Pah! It’s just so not cool to eat out these days unless the place you’re going to is moveable, secret or subterranean (i.e. in someone’s front room, preferably in Deptford). The menu, more than likely, is themed. It’s BYOB and, ideally, juggling midgets serve the amuse-bouches. Yep, it looks like supper clubs, as much as we might try to forget them, are here to stay.

Some of them, however, deserve to be taken a bit more seriously. When respected don’t-call-him-a-molecular-gastronomist chef Nuno Mendes turned his, luckily spacious, Dalston flat into weekly supper club The Loft almost a year ago it developed quite a following.

But, with plans to open a new ‘proper’ restaurant, Viajante in Bethnal Green Town Hall in March, Mendes won’t have time to keep The Loft going himself. So... he’s decided rather ingeniously to invite chefs from various gastro hotspots around the world to stay and take his place in the kitchen every Friday and Saturday night.

The first guest chef (starting Feb 18 for four weeks) will be Ben Greeno, from famed Copenhagen restaurant Noma, who will prepare a 12 course tasting menu for a maximum of 16 guests – so book now to secure yourself a place. Dinner doesn’t come cheap at £100 a head + VAT. But along with probably some of the most interesting and imaginative food you’ve tried this year, cocktails are created and wines are perfectly paired – so you can leave that £3.49 bottle of Rioja, along with any inhibitions, at home.
