The Young Ones

The young and the restless have been remarkably focused recently. No need to ask this set what they want to be when they grow up. Their sanguine response would be: why wait when you have talent? In the case of Rebecca Black, we could have waited well beyond Friday before she proclaimed herself a YouTube popstrel, but some young movers are following their passion and actually finding a place as industry shakers.
You probably caught underage paparazzo Austin Visschedyk in Adrian ‘Entourage’ Grenier’s film Teenage Paparazzo on Channel 4 this January. Then there was that interview with 11 year old fashion designer Cecilia Cassini that got tongues wagging and throats gagging. Hey, some kids are even hitting retirement at 14, with famed Stateside fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson just claiming she’s had enough of the front rows and free clothes three years after hitting fame and featuring on POP magazine’s first cover under Dasha Zhukova.
So it’s nice to find a kid whose passion doesn’t involve any lala-land limelight. Back in London and not quite on the brink of a burnout is Callum Hale Thomson, the 15 year old “star barista” heading up a small café recently opened within the YCN (Young Creatives Network) gallery/library space on Rivington Street. Grab an espresso, cortado, flat white or cappuccino from the boy wonder himself as he’ll be personally behind the bar until the 22nd April.
We reckon they should all meet up at Hackney’s Underage Festival this August and compare notes. Or collectively whip their hair like Willow Smith. Is that the sweet smell of success in the air, or just freshly ground coffee? Either way, we’re taking a shot.
