The EDITION, New York

In a Sentence
This is Ian Schrager’s 3rd EDITION Hotel (we aren’t counting Waikiki anymore).

About
Located on 24th Street and Madison Avenue, this is a grown up base for a Big Apple foray. Built in a 41-story clock tower, this truly is a bird’s eye view.

The Vibe
The lobby bar here – like in all Schrager hotels – makes you instantly feel the city beat. Go upstairs and the bar and restaurant are equally buzzy. As it’s still relatively new, you can tell it’s still an after work hotspot – it felt very post work, Sex and The City – lots of suit jackets over barstools and no whites after Labour Day.

Décor
Been to the London EDITION? There are a lot of similarities. The lobby and rooms are done in serene oaks and oatmeals, the staircase is sculptural, the candles flicker, and the Atherton restaurant is similarly designed. But although the interior décor may be similar to London, the vibe is definitely not – which isn’t a bad thing, just don’t come expecting a carbon copy.

The Staff
The staff here are good. Really, really good. They remember what you drank at the bar (like all good NY bartenders), they find you a car (courtesy car if they have one), and they’ll go the extra mile, whatever that may be (always have bills to tip). They’re all quite young, and we’re sure most of them have modelling/acting agents, too.

Highlights
The rooms. For NY, for the price, these rooms are huge (we had a loft, worth the splurge). They also have great views – the kind you want when you’re in NY. Look out the window and see 1WTC and the rest of the Big A sparkling. The bathrooms are extremely minimal and come complete with bespoke EDITION the Labo products and the beds have cosy (faux) fur throws. Varying digital artwork appears on the TV after turndowns (a collaboration with Sedition, ‘art for a digital age’), which was an interesting first. We love a chopped salad on a room service menu, especially when it has lobster as an option, too. Want something dirtier? There’s a Shake Shack across the street at Madison Square Park complete with lanes for queuing.

Details
The New York EDITION is on 24th St. and 5 Madison Ave.
