Culture Picks

The Culturist: October

September, as always, comes with a packed schedule. From new restaurants, hotels and bars to London Fashion Week and Design Festival, this month is a busy one. Our top picks of the month run from everything from grill rooms, dessert bars and sea containers, to shopping in Shoreditch and pop up houses in Trafalgar Square. Plus, there’s crazy golf and an Anna Nicole Smith opera. See you in October.

It’s finally here – Skye Gyngell’s first solo restaurant Spring. Bringing her penchant for seasonal dishes to Somerset House’s 'New" Wing', Spring features a daily changing menu of simple, 'ingredient-led' dishes: langoustines with seaweed butter, roasted turbot and beef fillets served with wild greens. Tipped as one of the openings of 2014, book a table now. Reservation lines open today.

PARTY: SUPA DUPA FLY VS SOUL FOOD

October 11 100 Shoreditch High street, E1 6JQ

Ace Hotel is getting a dose of Supa Dupa Fly’s 90s hip-hop this October. The monthly club night will be taking over Miranda but doing something a bit different: they’ll be starting the party with a pop-up diner. Ready yourself for ‘Jerk chicken with Jay-Z and blueberry pie with Biggie’. The menu will be three courses of soul food with live performances in between. And when the dishes have been cleared? Hit the dance floor to drop it like it’s hot.

DO: ICA Off-Site at the Old Selfridges Hotel

October 14-18 400 Oxford Street, W1A 1AB

If you’re after a Frieze alternative (but still want a slice of the action), try the ICA and its off-site happenings at the Old Selfridges Hotel. Expect a week of free live events: dance, music, exhibitions and discussions from international artists and performers. Our pick has to be the disco heavy Parallel Visions night presented by NTS radio with live sets by Golden Teacher, We Are Shining and Emotional.

DDRINK: LITTLE RED DOOR at Zetter Townhouse

October 8 49-50 St John's Square, EC1V 4JJ

Zetter Townhouse is about to get some Parisian love from the Little Red Door. Bartenders from the Marais speakeasy will be crossing la Manche for one night only to take the reins of the Clerkenwell institution. Expect exclusive creations such as the Blanco Collins, Poor Willy’s Mule and Don’t Boire. Although we don’t know exactly what’s in them, we trust their creds – Bombay Sapphire recently awarded head bartender Remy Savage ‘World’s Most Imaginative Bartender’.
