The Culturist: March

The month of May means things are hotting up. To get into the springtime spirit we have a rooftop disco, some jungle boogieing and Juleps. Plus, we’re exploring London’s baths and lidos via a new swim club. Sadler’s Wells is, as always, the hot dance ticket and food wise we’re hitting the pub. Enjoy!

WATCH: SADLER’S WELLS

May 9 Tickets from £12 Rosebery Avenue,  EC1R 4TN

Dance enthusiasts take note: the grand finale of BBC Young Dancer is taking to the Sadler’s Wells stage. Aged 16-20, the crème of the dancing crop will feature solos, duets, and an ensemble piece across four categories: ballet, contemporary, hip hop and south Asian. Book a ticket and watch the next big names bust a move.

DRINK: KANSAS SMITTY'S

May 21 63-65 Broadway Market, E8 4PH

Nothing says summer like a mint julep. Good job, then, that Kansas Smitty's, a new bar in Hackney, will be serving up just that, to a soundtrack of jazz. Situated in a basement bar on Broadway Market, the new jazzy (sorry) watering hole will be serving eight varieties of the classic tipple. Music wise, we’re told to expect a sour mash of jazz genres, influenced by the sounds of New York, New Orleans, Paris, and Havana.

DRINK II: THE MARKSMAN

May 15 254 Hackney Road, E2 7SJ

Stalwart pub The Marksman is set to get a makeover, thanks to veteran St. John chefs Tom Harris and Jon Rotheram. Expect a menu inspired by London and its diversity, from cooked hams and salt beef to pickled fish and mutton curry. Behind the bar, old world wines are the focus, as are beers and ales. And for those en route to Columbia Road Market, suckling pig and beer mustard buns are available for take-out.

PARTY: RESIDENT ADVISOR’S HOUSE OF DISCO ON DALSTON ROOF PARK

May 22, £10 on the door, 5pm-11pm 18 Ashwin Street, E8 3DL

Finally, some outdoor disco action. Resident Advisor’s House of Disco is back for another takeover at Dalston Roof Park. Like last year’s sell-out session, expect much of the same disco, house and techno beats up high. Fuel comes by way of cocktails and the in-house brewery, 40ft. As for sustenance, chef Tom Hunt will be on hand with oysters, burgers, and mezze plates. Advanced tickets have sold but there will be limited tickets on the door. Get there early!

FEAST: SUMMER TALES

May 22, Red Market, 288 Old Street, EC1V 9DP

Jungle fever has hit. Thanks to Summer Tales, this month we’ll be eating our street food from rope swing chairs, lying in hammocks and drinking in jungle huts. And just like Night Tales, expect a roll call of DJs (announced on twitter), stellar food offerings (including Burger & Lobster’s first pop up) and swim-up style cocktails from bars such as the Lazy Flamingo and the Frozen Punch bar.

In this case: London's best baths and lidos. All levels are welcomed. Simply pick the group you belong to: Tadpoles (beginners), Dolphins (intermediates) or Sharks (advanced), and dive in.
