The Culturist: January
January 2016 – here we go! Dalston has grown up and is back on our radar, Guy Gerber is visiting London, the capital is getting lit up and the Saatchi Gallery is turning 30. But aside from all that, the late, great David Bowie has dropped his 25th and final album. So if there’s only one thing to do this January…
DRINK: RUBY’S BAR & LOUNGE
72-76 Stoke Newington Road, N16+7XB Opens January 15
It was hot, then not, and now it seems Dalston is back on the radar for 2016: Silk Stockings, Jidori, and now Ruby’s Bar & Lounge. An extension of Ruby’s Cocktail Bar, you can expect the same kind of eclectic hedonistic hideaway, but with a focus on wine, beer and food (courtesy of Vietnamese street food specialists Hanoi Kitchen) – and a roster of live entertainment. Welcome back Dalston!
PARTY: GUY GERBER PRESENTS RUMORS LONDON
29 Great Suffolk St, Southwark, SE1 0NS From £20 30 January
We’ve been big fans of Rumors by Guy Gerber at Beachouse Ibiza so we’re excited for its one-night-only transplant to London. The style will be different – think an all-night warehouse party rather than a sun-drenched day party – but a stellar line up remains with the likes of Lee Burridge, D’Julz and of course, Guy Gerber on decks.
SEE: LUMIERE LONDON
See our capital in a new light, thanks to Lumiere London, the biggest-ever light festival to hit London. Expect a citywide takeover of all things light and bright, from neon stick men on Big Ben and a projection of stampeding elephants to (our favourite) an illuminated phone box turned fish tank. And it doesn’t stop there – there’s also sky-high plant sculptures, neon dogs, giant glowing birdcages… Download the free map and follow the light.
DO: CHAMPAGNE LIFE
Duke of York’s HQ King’s Road, SW3 4RY Free 13 January – 6 March
Marking its 30th birthday, the Saatchi Gallery will be celebrating with its first all-female show, featuring 14 emerging international talents, ranging from some in their 20s to those in their 50s – all in various stages of their careers. And make no mistake, this isn’t a show about women but by women, so expect a myriad of themes from pop to politics and tabloid culture.
LISTEN: DAVID BOWIE: BLACKSTAR
Available on iTunes £8.99
Blast his 25th and final album and let the legend live on. David Bowie is!
EAT: LUCKY CHIP BURGERS AND WINE DALSTON
The second opening for Dalston this month: Lucky Chip Burgers and Wine Dalston, the first permanent site for street food burger favourites and, interestingly, like the other Dalston openings of late, a more grown-up offering. Aside from burgers, there’ll be a selection of small and large plates such as 54 day-aged rib-eye steak and chicken parmigiana, a Friday night tasting menu, and an extensive wine list of over 100 bins, plus cocktails, bourbons and ryes.
