Exhibition-ist

February

Discovering some lip-smackingly good cultural ice-cream in the grey London slush, Dave Waters can’t get through February without...

1 … cuddling up to someone special while watching back-to-back rom coms. Head to the ICA for full day of romantic film viewing – with Gwyneth Paltrow and Joaquin Phoenix’s Two Lovers alongside timeless classics: The Shop Round the Corner (with James Stewart) and Casablanca.

Feb 14-15 , ICA, The Mall, SW1Y 5AH

2
… doing our bit for cross-cultural fertilization. Shun-kin, a collaboration between Theatre de Complicite  and Japanese writer Tanizaki, brings together the neon-glamour of Japan where, according to the Barbican, ‘beauty is forgiving and love is blinding’. Put that on your toast and try swallowing it, Eastenders!

Until Feb 21, Barbican, Silk Street, EC2Y 8D

3
… listening to the voice of honey-voiced crooner Jane Birkin. The Francophone British actress and singer is performing in London for the very first time since 2003, with pieces from her new album Enfants d’Hiver.

Feb 21, 7:30pm, Barbican, Silk St, EC2Y 8DS, £15-£25

…being hit over the head with a theatrical tour de force. Bringing together dancer, Silvie Guillem, theatrical wünderkind, Robert Lepage,  choreographer, Russell Maliphant, and fashion designer, Alexander McQueen, Eonnagata is their first performative collaboration. And it’s based on the true story of Charles de Beaumont – diplomat, writer and swordsman, who was also the first spy to dress as a lady to enact a disguise. How very dare he!

Feb 28-Mar 8, Sadler’s Wells, Roseberry Avenue, EC1R 4TN

… having our very own stab at stardom, in a charity fundraising one-off by Rankin. Up to 1,000 faces will be chosen for a simultaneous portrait shot by the man himself in August. The portraits will be on his website before being sold for £50 each, with all proceeds heading straight to Oxfam’s ever-hungry coffers.
