There's nothing worse than the slightly awkward tension which ensues about ten minutes into a full head of highlights, as you pretend to read your magazine and the stylist asks you whether you're going out tonight, or have a holiday planned. Not that she's listening to the answer. Which is why UJ completely fell for Gielly Green, which has that lovely balance of sleek, boutique style (fresh flowers, clean lines) and warm, genuine hospitality (how much do we love the juice bar downstairs?) nestled in the calmer back avenues behind Oxford Street.

The interiors are all warm neutrals with burnished metal mirror frames, glass accents, and cushy reception space complete with a well-stocked design-focused bookshelf to get you in the mood. There's an equally well appointed spa downstairs, where the lovely Amanda is known for her bespoke treatments and healing hands.

Ask for Helen if you want the best colour in town and none of the inane chat on the side; she's been in the industry for ten years with experience on magazine shoots, fashion shows and session work, and seems to instinctively know what works. Apparently some people are just born to be blonde - UJ included.
