Jasper Conran
Professionalism is an underrated commodity in British fashion, yet the strongest members of the London fashion Week team are those like Jasper Conran who provide professional collections which mix the desirable, the commercial and the catwalk with total dexterity and aplomb.
Taking the soft colour palette and teaming it with a nostalgic view of heritage summers from 30's dresses to 40's two pieces the collection successfully played the retro game but in a totally modern way. The light as air construction, the variety of silhouettes and the exquisite details added together created a relaxed harmony which certainly deserved its strong applause.
The collection also clearly differentiated the skills involved in Conran's own ready to wear and its luxury feel as a contrast to his work for Debenhams. The fabrics which included chiffon, organza, crepe de chine and georgette were handled beautifully by his workrooms and the cut of the fluid and flattering skirts and trousers demonstrated true craftsmanship.
The collection successfully encompassed Victoriana with pin tucking and corset details, soft 30's tea dresses and 40's style pants and tops through even to a hint of 50's Alma Cogan in the be ruffled frou frou dresses which certainly invited the image of the ballroom. There is absolutely no doubt that women will buy this collection when it appears; with a touch of something to suit many style sand shapes as well as being totally on trend for a season where the light touch is paramount.
