Top 5: Pizzerias

For national pizza day, and forever more

  • Pizza Pilgrims

    Various locations

Beginning life as pizza oven in the back of a van, Pizza Pilgrims didn’t stay small for long. There’s now five branches over London, with a new one set to open in Old Street soon (hurrah!). Brothers James and Thom brought the taste of Napoli back from their travels in Italy and gave London’s pizza scene a serious shake-up; if you’re looking for a taste of Italy in London, you won’t get much closer than Pilgrims.

  • Yard Sale

    Clapton and Finsbury Park

Yard Sale is one of North East London’s best-kept secrets. Forget Domino’s, when it comes to takeaway pizza, Yard Sale is what UJ’s dreams are made of. It started out as a supper club borne out of a back-garden pizza oven in Homerton, and now their 18-inch stone-baked pizzas are a UJ lazy Friday night staple. Plus, E17 residents can rejoice, because on February 20th, a new Walthamstow branch is opening.

  • Homeslice

    Various locations

Homeslice know how to do the classics well, but their stand-out is their innovative (and sometimes just kinda weird) flavour combinations. Cauliflower cheese and aubergine, oxtail and horseradish and wild venison with kale are some of the combinations on offer, and if you haven’t tried them, you’re just going to have to trust us when we say they work.

  • Radio Alice

    16 Hoxton Square, N1 6NT

A relative newcomer on the scene, Radio Alice is part bootleg radio station and part pizzeria, based out of an old school building in Hoxton Square. Like Homeslice, the focus here is on the ingredients and toppings, but Radio Alice are doing things a little differently. The fresh toppings are added after cooking to preserve their delicate flavour rather than incinerating them in the oven. We like.

  • Voodoo Ray’s

    Dalston, Camden, Shoreditch

When it comes to late night slices, NYC-style, Voodoo Ray’s are the one and only. Their Dalston branch is open until 3am on weekends, and their ‘full moon’ slice with bacon dust and japanese mayonnaise is only available after midnight. If you’re feeling extra hungry, their mammoth 22-inchers are available for £20.
