New York’s Burning Up!

Whether you’re an aural afficianado or just need some tunes to kick start the weekend, UJ’s sonorous sleuth scratches out the latest and greatest from the music scene for your listening pleasure.

1Telepathe

More music from the musical phoenix that is New York. This duo – comprising of Melissa Livaudais and Busy Gangnes – appeared on the scene back in 2006. Now, with their new album ‘Dance Mother’ produced with Dave Sitek’s studio, their sound has evolved into something complex and visceral, like a jam session in a forest with The Knife, Wildbirds and Peacedrums: crazed, raw, electronic, beat ridden and utterly, utterly brilliant. See them at Catch on November 24 or feel ashamed of yourself.

Telepathe will be playing at Catch on Kingsland Road on Monday Nov 24. For free. Catch, 22 Kingsland Rd, E2 8DA

Chairlift

For all lovers of hearty airborne vocals, guitar-ridden electronipop and MGMT. Originating from Colorado, this trio headed up by the gravely-larynxed Caroline Polachek make the kind of intelligent, moving pop tracks that evoke the spirit of city parks in the summer. Beautiful, urban and uncannily natural.  Check out their album ‘Does It Inspire You’ which just dropped on Kanine Records. Hot.

3The King Khan and BBQ Show

Some would be quick to say all of King Khan’s output is gimmick over substance. I, however, would like to disagree. Listen to their tracks and Khan and Mark Sultan aka BBQ’s tunes sound like Lou Reed’s dreams of the ‘70s. All skuzzy guitars, dance-inducing blues-infused rhythms, thrashing drums, strange psychedelic jangling and humorously obtuse lyrics.  Well worth a Google.

Uj's Loving

What UJ’s loving right now…

Music to drive to: Cinnamon Chasers ‘Luv Deluxe’ [Modus Records]. Sounds like John Carpenter in the mood to dance.

Cosmic disco: Hot Coins ‘Whole New Way’ [Tirk]. Optimistic music from the rings of Saturn. Beautiful. Plus FREE tracks on his website.

Future hip hop: Daedelus ‘Touchstone’ {Thavius Beck remix} [Ninja Tune]. Pure LA reverb badness with the darkest of hearts. HolLA!

Showstopper: The Motherf*cking Gaslamp Killer ‘Sitar Ride’ [unsigned]. Heliocentric-ness from another of LA’s finest (and they’re playing The Rhythm Factory on Nov 21 too). FREE podcast here.

The clever tidbit:
Cheb Zergui ‘ana dellali (I Cuddle Myself)’ [Sublime Frequencies]. Algerian Proto-Rai music from the ‘70s. I know, but bleedin’ great!.
