Gastronomy hits Dalston

Location
Adding to the Dalston/Haggerston culinary circuit, Mayfields neighbours firm-favourites Lardo, L'Entrepôt and Steve Parle's soon-to-open restaurant, meaning Shoreditch better watch out.

Vibe
Sociable, relaxed and filled with young trendy E8'ers. We loved the neighbourly vibe: service is friendly, tables are full and passers-by stop for chats. This may feel like a 'local', but food wise it's a destination.

Flavours
Here it’s all about mixing unexpected flavours to produce slightly experimental dishes (not normally seen in this neck of the woods). And with head chef Matthew Young (Dock Kitchen and Wapping Project) in charge, it was a slam dunk. From the starters of brawn with broad beans and the cured duck ham (a UJ first) to the sharing plates of lemon sole and licorice (which will divide opinions) and the turbot with almond sauce, Young has created some serious signature dishes. And it wouldn’t be an E8 restaurant without some trendy Monk’s Beard (seasoned with garlic, peas, lentils and egg) and beetroot (served with pork, onion and rhubarb) – both were fantastic. The desserts of chocolate mousse and milk sorbet may seem no-frills at first but the Asian flavours of kaffir lime and ginger granita knocked it out of the #normcore (when in Dalston…) park.

Décor
Think Scandi-cool. White walls and floor tiles, a pine feature wall and open kitchen. End of story.

Upshot
Normal menu aside, the Monday night supper clubs will be worthy of its own reviews. From the upcoming Spring Fish Supper to the Puglian Feasts, we're expecting good things.
