Gilgamesh

It may feel like something of a guilty pleasure, particularly since Paris Hilton was hanging out there on her last visit to London, but there's something that keeps me going back to Gilgamesh.

Maybe it's the Babylonian epic-ness of the place, or the extraordinary hydraulic sliding roof that gives you that inside-yet-outside feeling that's particularly appealing on a sunny weekend, or the proximity to the railway track, giving you an added thrill every time a train speeds past. Who am I kidding? It's Ian Pengelley's food.

I'm particularly excited to see he has recently launched a chef's table menu; eleven courses of pan-Asian loveliness, including salad of sweet shrimp with caviar and chu toro (medium fatty tuna), grilled wagyu beef with spicy ponzu and truffle and Malay noodles with lobster and watermelon jelly with sweet basil foam.

It may look like a WAG's boudoir but as long as Pengelley keeps cooking, I'll probably keep going.

Hours: Mon-Sun 12-3pm and 6pm-12am
Place: Camden Stables Market, Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AH
Cost: £45 (Chef's Table menu £75)

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Weekend Eats: Ida

I can't help wondering whether there would be less street crime if every neighbourhood had its own Ida.

  • Weekend Eats: Princess Victoria

Shepherd's Bush is not blessed with a multitude of fine eating places so it was a canny move of former Sommelier of the Year Matt Wilkin to refurbish the faded gin house the Princess Victoria and turn it into an above average gastro-tavern.

  • Weekend Eats: The Garrison

The owners of The Garrison must have been listening in when I described my perfect pub as it's as close as darn it.

  • Weekend Eats: The Connaught

We love it when one of London's grand-dame hotels has a refurb and the Connaught, which is now part of the Maybourne Group (which also owns Claridges and the Berkeley), is no exception.

  • Weekend Eats: The Beehive

When Claudio Pulze was revamping one of London's oldest pubs, the Beehive, Marylebone locals made sure they had their say: the carpet could go but they didn't want it changed too much and they would appreciate it if he could keep the flowers outside looking fresh to brighten the place up. The accommodating restaurateur obliged.
