Min Jiang

I've been writing about pubs quite a lot recently so I thought I'd readdress the balance with a healthy dose of glamour.

Min Jiang is the posh new Chinese perched on top of the Royal Garden Hotel, and with its slick lacquered decor and impressive vistas over Kensington Gardens, it's a real 'get dressed up and enjoy the view' kinda restaurant. I'm generally more a cosy banquette kinda girl but this is show-offy food which requires a more formal setting and slightly over-attentive service - luckily, though, the food is so good you almost don't notice the fussing.

It's all beautifully, delicately executed, from the pretty, pastel-coloured dim sum to the green bamboo tea, not to mention the lobster with ginger and spring onion which made me want to put a bib on and suck every last ounce of flavour from every bit of shell. But it's really all about the Beijing duck, which is proudly presented to you all wood-fired and honey-glazed before it is turned into pancakes, lettuce wraps and duck-crackling.

If you can, save room for the banana toffee fritters - we've got to allow ourselves some consolation for not having had a summer.

Lunch 12-3pm • Dinner 6-10.30pm
Place: 2-24 Kensington High Street, W8 4PT

ALSO IN EAT & DRINK

  • Weekend Eats: Goodman

Goodman, which has just opened on Maddox Street, is an odd concept; it's an American-style steak house - dark wood, banquettes etc - that originated in Moscow, where they have been 'championing the perfect steak' since 2003.  There are now seven of them over there so it obviously works for the Ruskies.

  • Weekend Eats: Odette's

Odette's was one of those places, when I was growing up, that I deemed to be the height of bohemian sophistication. A dimly lit, velvety place serving French classics to brooding creative Primrose Hill-dwellers.

  • Weekend Eats: Tsunami

A recent addition to the stretch is a bit more within reach (of my wallet, at least) and, I'll bargain, just as good, in terms of what you get on your plate, as the other two. Sister restaurant to the original Tsunami in Clapham, the new site is longer and somewhat lovelier, in terms of deco, and serves the same beautious, delicately-crafted food as its sibling, but just a notch better.

  • Weekend Eats: Chapters All Day Dining

Once a more formal restaurant called Chapter Two (Chapter One is in Kent), the same team have given the place a makeover and made it a bit more up-to-the-minute with a zinc bar, exposed brickwork, lots of mirrors and those modern dangly-pendulum lights.

  • Weekend Eats: The Pantechnicon Rooms

Sister to the Thomas Cubitt, this equally posh pub (or 'bar and restaurant' as they like to call themselves now) is so svelte, in an olde English country drawing room way, you half expect Mr Darcy to glide in any minute.
