Zandra Rhodes made a triumphant return to LFW on Wednesday night. The S/S 07 collection was of course full of riotous colours covering her signature kaftans, ambassador’s reception dresses, boxy tailoring and luxe swimwear. We went back stage after the show to talk to the grand dame of British fashion in person.

This is your first LFW show in over 20 years. How does it feel?
I’m very overwhelmed and excited. I’ve never shown in the tents before, it was so long ago that I used to show at Olympia or late at night at the Roundhouse in Camden.

Why did you decide that the time was right to come back?
I think so much has been influenced by what I’ve done and I’ve just designed a range of makeup with MAC that launches in Paris next week so when they asked me to do a show I felt brave enough to say yes.

What was the concept for the collection?
I went to Moscow and was very inspired by St Basil’s Cathedral.  The beehive hair for the show is based on the domes on the top. I also tried to make it look very me but you will still be surprised by the composed, stiffer shapes and the new range of handbags.

What do you think of how London fashion is perceived now?
Sometimes they tell us we have an incredible fashion scene and want to look at it. And sometimes they look the other way. I’m just going to keep designing and being inspirational.
