Review: Polytechnic - 'Down Til Dawn'
Polytechnic

There are so many bands to choose from right now, it can be hard to know which way to point your browser or which direction to turn your toggle wheel in.

Here's a new group from Manchester who tower above most of their UK contemporaries. In fact you could be forgiven for believing they are American or Canadian partly due to their breezy harmonies - which put them in the same league as The Shins - or their use of the distortion pedal - which places them somewhere near Arcade Fire or Dinosaur Jnr.

For a young band they sound remarkably confident thanks perhaps to producer Tom Stanley who worked with the Kaiser Chiefs on their last album. Opening live shows for The Strokes and The Young Knives doesn't seem to have hurt either.

Yet it's their own tight guitar playing, engaging vocals and knack for a catchy tune that makes Polytechnic one of the country's most promising new indie acts who, if they get given a chance, could have an appeal almost as wide as The Magic Numbers. As songs like 'Pep', 'Quay Street' and 'Cold Hearted Business' on new album 'Down Til Dawn' prove, it would be both hard, and foolish, to ignore this charismatic band.
