Let the Californian sunshine in…

Here's one for soul fans which I guess includes us all really. Not liking soul music would after all be akin to not enjoying good food. 'California Soul II' is one tasty soul treat courtesy of the Sunshine State.

It's a really juicy collection of rare tracks recorded on the West Coast between 1966 and 1982. It includes soul in many of its forms including Northern soul, funk, soul jazz and blues, but there's plenty of raw soul power too. The in-depth sleeve notes connect the dots between the largely unfamiliar artists made up of session musicians and players from San Francisco and Los Angeles' under-the radar soul scenes of the time, some of who went on to play with the likes of George Clinton, Sam Cooke and Fela Kuti.

Stand-outs include Gow Dow Experience's jazzy 'Compared To What?' and Mokie J.J. & R.O.B.'s psychedelic 'Beverley' and a great cut from Spanky Wilson.

Avid collectors will have a field day, but there are plenty of party gems, cosmic P-funk blasts and bluesy belters to keep us all coming back for more. Nothing less than a treasure trove of sunshine-soaked soul.

Various artists: 'California Soul 2' out on Ubiquity/Luv N' Haight on May 21. Available on Amazon.co.uk.
