Review: Wiley 'Playtime Is Over'

Grime ain’t over yet...

A pioneer of the grime scene, Wiley developed his 'eski-beat' signature sound with the Pay As U Go Cartel and his Roll Deep crew before gaining wider exposure with his debut album 'Treddin' On Thin Ice'.

That debut showed flashes of brilliance not just from his lyrical content but through his production because it was clear here was a real innovator when it came to electronic music.

'Playtime Is Over' confirms that talent is something Wiley has in buckets. Grime has always kicked at the boundaries dividing drum & bass, hip-hop, garage and dub-step, but this is one Eastender hell-bent on creating a stunning havoc through aggressive experimentation and brilliant sampling.

With input from a handful of fellow MCs, his stories are told over pounding beats, bottomless bass drops and catchy riffs as on the astonishing 'Gangsters' and 'Bow E3'.

There's plenty here to scare off the uninitiated but those interested in the bleeding-edge of UK urban music need look no further. Dizzee Rascal's new album and this show that there is still much ideas, talent and drive left in grime music. All we have to do is keep up with it.

Wiley 'Playtime Is Over' out on Big Dada on June 4. Available on Amazon.co.uk.
