Review: James Yorkston 'Roaring The Gospel'
Review: Fania DJ Series: 'DJ Format'

A roaring trade...

James Yorkston is a folk singer who gets better with every release. He might share the same label as the Arctic Monkeys but his graceful tones couldn't be further from the unbridled energy of Sheffield's most successful sons.

His latest collection of songs is described by Domino as a "ramshackle bag of laments, cover versions and traditionals". Whether that means a bunch of "outtakes" or not is irreverent. For 'Roaring The Gospel' actually surpasses 2006's studio album 'The Year Of The Leopard'.

It's clear that storytelling runs though Yorkston's veins. As a young member of the same Fence Collective in Fife from which sprouted talents King Creosote and The Aliens, it is perhaps not surprising that he has developed a rich lyrical honesty and endearingly inventive musical twist to his folky roots. Banjos, mandolins and Fender Rhodes all get added to his simmering brew resulting in fine odes such as 'The Hill & The Heath'.

With many musicians these days not given the space to mature, it's pleasing to see this one continue to flourish.
