Being located far from the maddening din that is London can be a real advantage when it comes to spotting cultural or indeed musical delights. The media and marketing glare of our beloved capital can occasionally distort one's critical vision.

As a music junkie with a habit to feed, it's indeed healthy to sometimes turn away from the sound emporiums of London and look further afield in the quest for a fresh aural fix.

Manchester has long been the home of decent record shops the most famous being Eastern Bloc. On the same street where this institution is housed, you'll find Vinyl Exchange - a second hand record shop of note - but, more importantly, this is also where Piccadilly Records presides.

This shop is a music fanatic's dream. It covers all the obvious genres such as indie, jazz or house, but it also does a nice line in new-psyche-folk, cosmic, exotica and what they engagingly describe as "weird shit". And, let's face it, every house needs some weird shit.

The key to any good record shop is of course its staff, and the staff here know their Animal Collective from their Polar Bear and are a proven quantity when it comes to buying in a wide range of great music.

Thanks to the power of electricity and digital mice, you can shop at Piccadilly Records from the comfort of your own dwellings without ever having to travel to the correctly named Grim North.

This is a very good thing. Use it well.
