At
one point, I did consider getting an iPhone - just because
it's so pretty. But then, everywhere I looked I saw
it: hidden away in protective cases, stuffed into woolen
socks, or even left at home so that it wouldn't get
damaged, scratched, or breathed on wrong.

At
first I thought that these must be the same people who
keep the plastic covering on their sofas - but no. MP3s,
cameras, sunglasses, passports, you name it, can and
is being safely bumper-proofed in anything from rubber
to Gucci. And now, from the looks of it, the turn has
come for our footwear.
Yes, this year has seen several modern takes on galoshes.
So, at the first drop of rain, simply slip into one
of SWIM's slippers - they even have special-made models
for stilettos - or cover up completely with a Shuella,
and you'll be home and dry.

Clever,
I guess, but if you had enough foresight to stuff
a pair into your handbag - and these things aren't
exactly compact (your shoes fit inside, for crying
out loud) - then you might also have considered
to put on appropriate footwear. Me, I call a cab
when it rains. Though that, of course, does risk
getting your phone wet.
