UJ Ibiza: SEPTEMBER 2013

Closing parties… Nooooooooooo! That means that even the extended summer is almost over. But that's not to say it won't go out with a BANG!

First, a recap. A hectic bank holiday weekend included a Mamboat day (the best, and be sure to bring a good soundtrack), Idris' final night at Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes (which ended up being the penultimate night, he just can't get enough), dinner at SACCA complete with, um, a Jedward and Tara Reid spotting, Love Brunch at Destino, the Boujis party, Matinee @ Amnesia, which we forgot was so great, Solomun, Dita at Space, and a DC-10 shakedown straight from the beach. It was a busy one, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

Some end of summer notes… we love Idris – hope he comes back for more next year – and hope to see more of the boat to Formentera parties. We're proud of George and Jonathan for their success with SACCA; the space is beautiful, and it's great to see the island continuing to do interesting collaborations, like Richie's ENTER.SACCA evening. And on a UJ note, it was truly heartwarming to see (undercover, of course) so many people on our BA flight using our Ibiza app, yeah!

Signing off the last newsletter of the season, thanks for reading UJ Ibiza. Now book those flights and join us for closings. One last disco!

See you on the dance floor.

xx Team UJ

ANTS!

Surprise of the summer

Delivering week after week was the surprise summer curveball party Ants, which crawled out of nowhere and thanks to some canny bookings and a brilliant cosmo-disco vibe, proved that deep tech could flourish beyond Space in Playa d'en Bossa. By also putting a DJ booth in the back (turn around!), they made great use of space, creating a more intimate atmosphere void of flashing lights and smoke machines; just people standing on anything that got them a better vantage point of the booth. Viva the colony!

CLOSING PARTIES

Sunday is funday

Not sure if you're going yet? Come on. Make like a UJ and arrive on Saturday, October 5 for a semi quiet one. Okay, pop into Ushuaïa's closing for a bit – lineup to be announced. Then, on Sunday morning, wake up and head to Amnesia where things (which started Saturday night) will be well underway. When the crowds get to be too much, make your way over to the Space terrace. Have a time out afterwards at the Pacha restaurant and then gear up for Solomun + 1. It's a big one, but DC-10 doesn't start until Monday late afternoon, so you should still have plenty of time for beauty sleep. Tag us in pics if you go please! #ibizaclosingsUJ

BOUJIS

Highlights from the 10th annual Boujis Ibiza party

Another year, another Boujis Ibiza party! Set in the 'secret location' of S'Estanyol, partygoers were once again treated to a night by the sea, with Belvedere, Moët and Dom flowing. The Boujis staple – 'Mr Bongo', a.k.a. Ameet Jugnauth – was drumming up the crowd, while well-known faces mingled on the beach.

UJ GUIDE HIGHLIGHT – CICALE

A recent addition to our guide

Homegrown vegetables, wild line-caught fish and fresh pasta made daily are all part of the labour of love that is Cicale. On the Sant Joan road in the San Lorenzo countryside, this incredible restaurant is housed in a 200-year-old finca, taken over and renovated in 2006 by the Italian owners, Micheala and Paolo. The menu changes daily, and they also serve up a mean brunch and roast on Sundays.

38 DEGREES

End of season detox, anyone?

After closing parties, it may be time to recharge; at 38 Degrees, they have two options to get you back on track. For those looking for the green yourself back to health option, the "Ibiza Detox" package – a three-day alkalizing juice cleanse, which also includes a nutritionist consultation, lymphatic drainage massage and detox contour wrap – could be the one. For something more active, the "End of Season" includes one PT session per day (choose from activities such as yoga, Pilates, hiking, beach circuits, meditation, or suggest something!), one excursion—stand-up paddle boarding for us, please—and up to five group activities per day. Did we mention that both packages include three nights at the Aguas de Ibiza Eco Luxury Hotel and full use of the Revival Wellness Club (hello, steam room and jet pool)? From €800 per person.

RALPH'S ROUNDUP – THE IBIZA 2013 LOWDOWN

Our man about town and all-round music sage gives us his end of summer roundup

Smile, breathe deep and take that first step off the plane because September in Ibiza really is the best time to get your club on. From the start of the season's closing month, the roads are less congested, the clubs are less packed, everyone knows what they're doing and the summer's anthems have already been decided. In short, it's the best time to head out for a week of fun, sunshine and closing parties with your closest friends.

At the end of the month is when the techno elite head back for one final swansong, with Cocoon closing on September 30th (sure to be followed by an after-party of epic proportions), and Hawtin's ENTER. bound to be followed by a beach or villa carry-on that Kenneth Williams would be proud of.

And what is there to be said for the 2013 season? Well, for one thing, Carl Cox, Solomun, Jamie Jones and Richie Hawtin proved that superstardom was a guarantee for road-blocked parties, and Pharrell Williams' appearance at Ushuaïa proved that Ibiza still loves a hip hop guest it can deliver live – and Williams most definitely delivered.

One of the best after-hours of the season came courtesy of a private yoga retreat (as George Michael once sang, if you were there, you know) and from July onwards, the glorious sunshine mixed with deep house across the island. Meanwhile, the biggest techno moment of the month came for Ricardo Villalobos' birthday at Cocoon on August 5th, during the infamous 'Lion' week, where he not only played his best set of the season but also had the entire crowd singing him happy birthday. And then promptly played his remix of Beck's Cellphone's Dead as the last tune of the night. Magic.

Radio One weekend also proved as hectic as ever, with Nervo, Solomun, Pete Tong and George Fitzgerald all bringing the energy to Ushuaïa and Hot Since 82 providing the peak-time club moment at Sankeys on Friday night. Biggest moment of the night? Benga dropping R Kelly. Cue mass singalong. And while we're hoping that the TOWIE brigade don't continue to spoil DC-10 and Ushuaïa for everyone else, what defines 2013 is a sense of pent-up excitement and occasional disappointment. Frustratingly, Booom! didn't open until midway through the season and across the island, some of the smaller brands have struggled to translate the UK hype into Balearic gold dust. It was also the summer of swaps, with Dice playing at DC-10 for the first time in 7 years and Carl Cox playing for Music On for the first time ever. All this can only be a good thing. But when the dust has settled, let's see who comes back for the next round in 2014. See you down the front.
