IBIZA WHAT A SEASON! After our team tuned in to the live stream of Carl Cox’s final Music is Revolution at Space last week, we are well and truly ready for Space Closing this weekend. 15 years for Carl at Space, 27 years for Pepe with Space – there are a lot of memories for so many in this special club. If you too have some of your own, we hope we’ll be seeing you on the dancefloor this Sunday; it’s sure to be a day-night-day we won’t forget! That’s about it. All roads lead to Space, what a summer.

XX, Team UJ

FIND OF THE SUMMER

DIY Boating

We at UJ get excited when we stumble across an actual FIND and this one is! Heli Rent A Boat rents zodiac style boats for €170 a day. No concierge fees, no minimum drink spend, just a flat hire fee, and you don’t even need a license for the small ones! If you do have a basic navigation skipper license, you can rent larger boats, too. So if you trust yourself behind the wheel, this is a great way to see the coast. And if you’d really rather leave it to the pros, they have a very competitive taxi service, too.

CIRCOLOCO TURNS 18

HBD to youuuuuuuuuuu!

Considering how in the first couple of years you wouldn’t see more than 100 or so people in the club, it’s quite incredible how different the 18th birthday experience is in 2016: but that’s partly what you pay for, with line-ups that can’t be recreated anywhere else on the island. And while Paradise is essentially Circo’s recently discovered house-loving cousin, Circoloco is still the best musical experience in Ibiza, which is why everyone from Madonna (who arrived with a crew rather than bouncers) to P Diddy continue to visit the spot. It’s also the only club where DJs would (almost) cut off their right arm to play, and it’s made superstars out of Seth Troxler and The Martinez Brothers. Ironically, those superstars aren’t really what the club is about: with no table service operating, no one is better than anyone else here. Except Madonna of course.

CUISINE OF THE SUMMER

Light bright!

This summer it was all about Nikkei in Ibiza. With Corichancha by Blue Marlin becoming the pre- Paradise hot spot for moonlit garden dining – ceviche, tiraditos and anticuchos, oh my! – and La Gaia being a constant staple for a pre- Pacha fix, it truly was the summer of Japanese/Peruvian cuisine. What’s on the horizon for 2017? We’d take a poke that poké’s on the way!

THIS ROOM!

OD’s suite life

If you want to stay central and splurge for the weekend, check out the Duplex Suite at OD Talamanca. There are two suites, side by side, at the top of the hotel, each with two bedrooms, a kitchen, small pool, a great terrace with table for entertaining and amazing views. We also noted a tub and deck chairs for lounging. The best part? You still get that same hotel service (room service! Laundry!) but with the space of a flat. One to consider if you are hosting something on the isle.

UshuaÏa Closing

Weekend warm up

What happens when you see a club line up – make that an outdoor club line up, by the pool – that includes Damian, Seth, Andrea Oliva, Martinez Brothers, Lauren Lane and Black Coffee? You go! Doors open at mid day, so get ye self to the ball. But remember. Don’t turn into a pumpkin: this is the start to a very incredible weekend, so pace, pace. (Or rather, BRACE BRACE). If you need us, we’ll be popping into Minami for ENTER.Sake and spicy edamame breaks. Slow and steady wins the race in this marathon!

GOODBYE SPACE!

27 years: what a legacy. From the early days as home to We Love and ENTER, many nights and days have been lost and eventually found in Space. If you were smart, you hit the dancefloor for the final, end-of-an-era closing of Carl Cox Revolution is Music (sob) and stalked shop.spaceibiza.com for tickets to the October 2 actual closing. And now it’s here! A couple words of advice from team UJ. In the past (2010, to be exact), we’ve seen them shut the guest list and only accept ticketholders due to overcrowding, so whatever you do, get a ticket and get there early. Highlights will definitely include Carl Cox making his final *final* appearance before Space turns into, well, who knows!, Erick Morillo revisiting the glory days of the open-air terrace, plus appearances from Kolsch, Maceo Plex, Tale Of Us and countless others. Space: this really is the final frontier. SEE YOU THERE!

Presale tickets are sold out. Ibiza Spotlight says tickets available on the door, we hear from 4PM

CLOSING ATTIRE

Dig em out

We’ve been trying to think of the appropriate attire for Space closing. Piers commemorative headpiece? Sequins? Print-tastic carnival-esque two piece? But no, it’s got to be Space vintage wears. Smiley faces and retro logos: dig ‘em out. Oh, and we’ll have a Space 27 T-shirt too please, when they’re back in stock. One to get framed.

AFTER PARTIES WHERE ARE YOU

Everything’s better in the sunshine

Our two favourite parties this year have both been afters. First up, Cocoon’s after party in May, where we headed into the hills to hear Sven behind the decks for hours, with Ibiza’s finest dancing the day away and chilling by the pool. What a way to kick off the season. And then there was a private party at _____’s house, after he finished an amazing set at Amnesia, where the only reason we left at 3PM (oops) was because of a power cut. It truly felt like Ibiza of yesteryear and we soaked up every moment. Now we’re wondering, where’s the Space afters??? If nothing else, all back to ours!

GREY GOOSE
ULTIMATE SUMMER SOIRÉE IBIZA

Good times on the White Isle with Grey Goose

Last week UJ descended on Ibiza with Grey Goose and 75 of Europe’s best bar industry professionals – from bar and club owners to mixologists, innovators and influencers – to see the season out with The Grey Goose Ultimate Summer Soirée.

The Ibiza event was the final in a summer of European Grey Goose Ultimate Summer Soirées, and was the result of a competition that Grey Goose ran which gave key mixologists and members of the trade the chance to submit a proposal to create their own ‘Ultimate Summer Soirée’.

Detailed proposals included creative vision, production, drinks, dinner menus and a budget, and a panel of judges (including someone from team UJ, wahey!) chose the winner, Mario Gruenenfelder (owner of Berlin’s Amano Bar, Mani Restaurant, Bar Tausend and Rocco & Sanny in Berlin, and Barcelona’s Ocaña). His winning proposal brought the French Riviera to life in Ibiza and Grey Goose kindly flew key industry in to experience it.

With innovative cocktails, an outstanding 75-person, seated ‘family style’ dinner, and cabaret performances, the renowned Blue Bay Villa (with panoramic vistas) was transformed into a chic Boulangerie Bleue with Côte d’Azur vibes. Standout cocktails by Mario’s team included The Green Mary (Grey Goose vodka, tomatillos, cucumber, mint, cilantro, jalapeño, horseradish, sal de chipotl) and the French Lemonade (Grey Goose Le Citron vodka with grilled white peaches, kumquats, vanilla sweet and sour mix and rosé).

Tunes by DJ Frank Rübcke (aka OCTUPONE), who plays global hotspots like La Granja (Ibiza), Scorpios (Mykonos) and Papaya Playa (Tulum), kept spirits high and after dinner, when the clock struck 12, the party descended to the villa’s club. Only in Ibiza.

To host your own Grey Goose Ultimate Summer Soirée, find Grey Goose vodka recipes and exclusive Riviera playlists by DJ Zimmer here.

UJ RESTAURANT AWARD OF 2016 GOES TO….

Can Pilot #UJLOVES

You know we love a local spot. Something where you feel like the staff are family, and the atmosphere and food keep you coming back. And on that note, this summer (and always) we just can’t get enough of Can Pilot. Set on the side of the road in San Rafael, here’s where you come for some light abuse (‘What! You’re late! You can wait! How many extra people did you bring with you?! No reservatioooooon?! Argh!’), buzzy atmosphere and some of the best grilled meat AND seafood on the isle. And that last part for us is really one of the key highlights. Sure, Balafia is amazing, and RT Grill El Pulpo in Talamanca too, but if you’re with any fish or veg only eaters, dinner for them at these greats is very limited. Not here. So if you haven’t already, put it on your list for next year and to Can Pilot, we salute you. Thanks for all. See you soon.
