Gallery Run
Master stroke

The Past Was Perfect, wasnt it?

We imagine London used to be more authentic, more bohemian, more creative, back in Ye Olden Times, before we lost all our little shops to the faceless Tesco Metros and identikit Strada-alikes

So ask yourself this: does London contain more supermarkets (including all the new Locals/ Metros) or more art galleries? The answer, in the not very scientific study I've just conducted, is art galleries, by an urban mile. There are over 400 in the various listings magazines, and few of these existed even five years ago. London, in short, is being over run by galleries.

The latest, which opens today in Lots Road, Chelsea, is the Solana Art House, which debuts with a show by 80 year old Russian artist Klara Galitsyna, who describes her life as a creative experiment, and who has moved through numerous styles from figurative to purely abstract in her long career.

In many ways the differing styles and themes on show are a one-woman exposition of all the major 20th century art trends.
