Another Week, Another Folk Album
Folkin' it up

Unlike buses folk albums come regularly on time every week.

The resurgence of folk music in the past couple of years has been very welcome and made a nice acoustic change from indie boys with spiky haircuts singing about kebabs.

The downside has been a glut of releases as everyone including the milkman has picked up a guitar and started singing about special times spent in fields. So what you need is a folk-o-meter, a device that sorts the hippie twaddle from the golden shafts of folk brilliance.

Let's see what it recommends...

Alela Diane: 'Songs Whistled Through White Teeth' & 'The Pirate’s Gospel'

Two incredibly captivating collections from an amazing singer from Portland, Oregon who has been endorsed by Joanna Newsom no less.

Herman Dune: 'Giant'

A fine album at the more indie-pop end of the folk genre which includes the classic 'I Wish That I Could See You Now'.

Marissa Nadler: 'Songs' III: Bird On The Water'

This album has a wonderfully warm feel and includes the heart-stopping 'Diamond Heart'.

Jon Redfern: 'May Be Some Time'

Great new British talent who should appeal to John Martyn fans.

James Yorkston: 'Woozy With Cider'

You might be familiar with this superb Scottish singer but do you have a copy of his latest single? It's destined to be a Balearic classic. Spoken word has never sounded so right.
