RCA Graduate Show
Born of the 1851 Great Exhibition for which Crystal Palace was specially constructed, The Royal College of Art moved to its current home among the denizens of South Ken six years later in 1857. For the intervening century and a half, the College has been responsible for the training of thousands of the country's finest young artists, and to celebrate this momentous anniversary, they have erected an aptly massive temporary structure in Kensington Gardens to house works from the RCA's Design and Applied Arts graduates, whilst the College over the road simultaneously exhibits from the Painting, Photography and Printmaking departments. Curated by Claire Catterall, this ambitious project looks set to be one of the largest and most unique of its kind in, well, 150 years or so, and really is an essential amongst this year's grad shows.

Kinetica
What a pleasure is Kinetica. Housed neatly in Spitalfields market, it manages to combine the area's artistic heritage and unshakable leftfield tendencies with the air of industrialization and modernization that is working its way into the pores of East London. Focusing, as its name suggests, on movement, action and interaction, and often with a distinct technophilic edge, the gallery's current exhibition stretches its kinetic tentacles to encompass the curious world of sonic art. As much one to hear as to see, Soundwaves, running in conjunction with this year's Cybersonica Festival, offers everything from a photophonic sound synthesizer and a phonetic voice theremin to soundtoys, a gang of robotic and kinetic sound machines, and an orchestra of household objects.

Time:
Wed-Sun: 11am-6pm (closed Mon-Tue).
Until 29 June.
Place:
Kinetica, SP2 Pavillion, SpitalFields Market, E1.
Cost:
Free

E8: The Heart of Hackney
Wander a stone's throw North East of the 'Ditch up into Hackney-proper and a curious shift occurs. Some poor individuals find themselves on-guard, uncertain of their new surroundings, whilst for others this is the most comfortable corner of our fair city. Whether you love it or hate it, Transition is following on the heels of its insightful anatomy of E9 with this slip next door to challenge, poke, or entirely dismantle your preconceptions of the area. Whilst the various photographic, literary, acoustic, sculptural and even psychogeographical (your guess is as good as mine) representations and investigation of Hackney are all intriguing in their way, the highlight has to be walkwalkwalk's wonderful tour throw the 'hood, via those most artistic of establishments: the humble chippy. Expect limited edition chip forks and wrapping paper for your piece of cod. No, really.

Time:
Private View Fri 15 June 6.30-9pm. Fri-Sun: 12-6pm. Until July 15.
Place:
Transition Gallery, Regent Studios, 8 Andrews Rd, E8.
Cost:
Free.
