Rock Out

Modern Menswear. Makes Me. WANT TO ROCK OUT!

And I'm not alone. Menswear was forever the poor orphan brother of the glamorous world of skirts and suspenders occupied by sophisticated Sophia, the fierce elder sister. No more.

This week sees the launch of Modern Menswear, a book that celebrates the incredible diversity and ingenuity of the new wave of menswear designers. In truth, those in the industry have long known about Bernard Willhelm, Stefan Schneider, Raf Simons et al, but contrary to opinion, in fashion, success does not come overnight.

This book goes behind the scenes to peer into the sketch books and influences that drive everyone from Paul Smith to Rick Owens and John Galliano. Sheer porn for those who know their dolman sleeve from their raglan.

To emphasise just how hot modern menswear is, comes the news that Kim Jones is to bring his particular brand of street cred to British luxury menswear house Dunhill, he's been appointed creative director; and that Raf Simons is the latest designer to use Fred Perry's iconic shirts as a Blank Canvas.

There's no excuse any more boys - personal shoppers are available at all good stores for those beyond repair.

MODERN MENSWEAR by Hywel Davies, out now.

"You get what you pay for,' has always been the rule. But last week, a landmark ruling by the Advertising Standards Authority allowed machine-made suits to be called "bespoke' - a term which Savile Row tailors apply only to suits which are cut by hand, uniquely for the wearer's body.?
