Polyester Panache

Last year was all about the 80s: neon, Boombox... and isn't it Kramers' Theorem that time moves in reverse? So, we're now back to the 70s.

Timely then is this weekend's screening of Viva. Released last year, director Anne Biller's rift on cult classic Valley of the Dolls was the style star of film festivals worldwide; it does that kitch inspiration thing to a T. While there's orgies and bohemia, the main draw is Barbi's (the main character) wardrobe and techni-color sets. A feast for the senses.

Catch it this Saturday as part of the Whitechapel Gallery's 'Beyond the Valley of the Dolls' event.

Alternatively, if you've tired of vintage chic check out a selection of films that explore the changing relationship between fashion and film (Bella Frued and John Malkovich are among the contributing directors). As an extra bonus you get Bella live at the post-film discussion panel. This Sunday at the ICA.

Sure, she can get you down sometimes – all the unrelenting rain, the head-bowed charging and barging from fellow Londoners – but then, when you take a quiet moment and a long look out across the river from Waterloo Bridge, even with all the hideous cranes and insidious grey, London sure is perty.

Attention spans are - pay attention! - attention spans are shrinking faster than ever. Apparently we spend less than a minute on a single web page wherever possible, and even then prefer to scan, taking in only about 20% of written material.
