The Culturist

London’s cultural highlights this March

We’ve got a little bit of everything for you this month… art, photography, butchery classes. You know, the usual. With glimpses of springtime (combined with the odd gale force), we’re starting to broaden our horizons too and look to summer holidays with the Biennale in Marrakech, a fashion retrospective in Paris and a heads up for the new Cipriani Ibiza. We feel warmer just thinking about it.

ART:
FetaFantaFatima
. . .
March sharpish to this one as the gallery (temporarily set up in an abandoned flooring shop) will close along with the exhibition. Mixing high and low culture, Berlin based artist Marcus Weber’s large-scale paintings uniquely combine fine art with comic strip imagery. Park paving and scattered birdseed on the floor sets the scene for benches, birds… and people with triangle heads.

Feb 24-March 24
PALAGKAS Temporary,
62 Church Street, NW8 8ET

EAT:
Spuntino Brunch Menu
. . .
We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: brunch is booming. Big time. One of our fave Soho spots has decided to get in on the action, launching a new brunch menu with classics such as French toast sidled up next to bresaola, pickled celeriac and egg salad. And as it’s not available ‘til 11am (or 12 on Sunday) they’re definitely catering for you late-night ravers out there.

From March 5
61 Rupert Street, Soho, W1D 7PW

PHOTOGRAPHY:
The Bigger Picture
. . .
Most people know AA Gill for his cutting remarks and convoluted restaurant reviews in The Sunday Times. But for his collaboration with photographer Tom Craig, he’s put away his claws and penned stories to a series of unseen photos: from life on a North Sea trawler to the glaciers of Greenland; encountering Tasmanian devils, Haitian hotspots and cricket matches on the streets of St Paul’s.
. . .
March 5-10
Flaere Gallery, 28 Cork Street, W1S 3NG

. . .

FASHION:
Marc Jacobs Louis Vuitton
. . .
Marc Jacobs, the prince of design (and Louis Vuitton’s leading man) sees his retrospective at the fashion house begin this week at Les Arts Décoratifs. Celebrating 15 years of Jacobs’ contributions at LV - everyone remembers the Murakami multi-coloured logo bag and the Stephen Sprouse graffiti - the exhibition also dedicates a floor to eponymous designer Vuitton. So trunks, bags and bunny ears.
. . .
March 9 - Sept 16, €9.50
Les Arts Décoratifs,
107 rue de Rivoli 75001 Paris

LEARN:
DeRaza Iberico Pig Day
. . .
Pitt Cue Co. lovers listen up. Catalan Cooking are holding an Iberico Pig Day, where you can learn how to DIY. Begin with a butchery demo (and pork belly rolls) before putting your newfound skills into action. Learn how to make pork hamburgers, tartare, morcilla, chorizo and sobrasada. Oh and pig trotter paella and pork cheeks in chocolate.
. . .
March 25, £85
Arch 76 at Maltby St Market, Druid St, SE1 2HQ

THEATRE:
Mogadishu at The Lyric
. . .
A searingly insightful look at modern school life, Franzmann’s debut play is the vivid account of what happens to a teacher when she is accused of racially abusing a pupil. A sell-out last year, book your tickets quick as it’s only back for a week. The Lyric is churning out great plays at the moment so check out their future line up too.
. . .
March 27-31, £12.50-£35
Lyric Hammersmith, Lyric Square,
King St, 50 Berners Street W6 0QL.

INTERNATIONAL:
Marrakech Biennale
. . .
If you’re itching for Art Basel or after a Venice alternative then the Marrakech Biennale is a stellar option. Celebrating North African art, film and literature, the festival has also seen the likes of Zadie Smith and Tracey Emin participate. This year’s one to watch is Moroccan photographer Hicham Benohoud. Not to mention it will give you the opportunity to have a snoop around one of the grandest hotels in Marrakech.
. . .
Until June 3

SHOP:
PPQ X RULE BIKE
. . .
If you went to the AW12 PPQ show you’ll know what we mean when we say that bikes got chic. PPQ teamed up with lifestyle brand Rule to create a limited edition collection of handmade (in Devon) bicycles. There are only 100 (50 in ruby, 50 in emerald) available so get your name on the list. Stat.

COMING SOON:
CIPRIANI Ibiza
. . .
Cipriani, the chic Venetian-born restaurant, will open another outpost this summer in the Ibiza Gran Hotel, adding to their already dazzling repertoire (Miami, Monte Carlo). We’re not sure how we feel about this one - Ibiza has stayed away from big namers and kept the restaurant scene largely off the beaten track, but we’ll give any place that serves Bellinis a go.

Opens Summer 2012
Ibiza Gran Hotel,
Paseo Juan Carlos I, nr. 17 Ibiza 07800
