Weekend Guide

The sun is shining, the weather is sweet. Makes you want to move… (sorry). So this weekend we have you moving all over the shop: put in some pub time on Friday before a 90s bonanza at XOYO, make like a Mexican (or New Yorker) at La Bodega Negra on Saturday night, and head to Wimbledon for some Sunday sushi or Dover Street for a new art gallery (and shopping, always shopping). Otherwise, we’ve got limited edition scarves and capsule collections on our radar, as well as refreshing (literally) product picks. And another Miami suggestion for you. We couldn’t resist.

This Weekend’s Picks
• FRI DJ Yoda at XOYO • SAT La Bodega Negra • SUN Gazelli Art House

DRINK:
The Jugged Hare
  PARTY:
Supa Dupa Fly at XOYO

When was the last time you went to a pub for a good pint? Ok us neither. But Ed and Tom Martin’s latest venture is changing our minds. Plus for meat fiends there’s a state-of-the art eight-spit rotisserie, charcoal grill, cold room with hanging game, walk-in wine room and Sunday roasts. Not one for vegetarians then.   #Welovethe90s here in the UJ office (we have Aaliyah playing as we type) so we’re obviously excited for the Supa Dupa Fly party at XOYO this weekend, a celebration of 90s sounds. DJ Yoda will take to the turntables (download his free mix), supported by Kings of the City, Chima Anya, DJ Kaya and more.

SHOP:
Misha World at Other Criteria
  EAT:
La Bodega Negra Restaurant

Alexander McQueen, Hermès, Etro: everybody loves a statement scarf. So get down to Other Criteria this weekend for limited edition scarves by artist Misha Milovanovich. NB: they’ll make a good mother’s day gift. Made from Italian silk twill, the 10 designs are fantastical - taking inspiration from jazz, pop culture, the 60s and manga - in a flurry of pastels, tribal and geometric prints. We’d like all 10, please.   If you’ve already sampled La Bodega Negra’s café and roadside taquería, prepare yourself for a second Mexican fix this week as the restaurant is now open (it opens Friday). Serving authentic Mexican cuisine (tostaditas, tacos, slow roasted lamb) and over 60 tequilas and mezcals, the restaurant is Mexico City meets Williamsburg NYC. With a lot of tequila. We like.

ART:
Gazelli Art House
  EAT:
Sticks ‘n’ Sushi

After popping up all over London in venues ranging from private homes to warehouses, Gazelli are opening their first permanent gallery on fashion haven, Dover Street. Designer shoes and art, oh my! Continuing the theme of the five main classical elements: Fire, Earth, Water, Air, and Ether, the current exhibition, Bodhi, focuses on the search for enlightenment. Deep. Now where are the shoes?   Wimbledon may be the equivalent of the Outer Hebrides for most Londoners but it’s becoming worth the trek for it’s culinary offerings. First The Lawn Bistro tempted us, now Copenhagen sushi spot Sticks ‘n’ Sushi has us jumping on the District line. Exactly what it says on the tin - hot bites served on sticks, sushi and sashimi.

Ceviche – Piscos in Soho

17 Frith Street, W1D 4RG | 0207 292 2040 | www.cevicheuk.com

Location
Much like Ronnie Scott’s over the road, Ceviche’s plain black exterior is easily missed on the somewhat bleak-by-Soho-standards Frith Street — top and tailed by a Nandos and Caffé Nero. Stick your nose to the windows though and you’ll be drawn inside by the warm, buzzy bar and Peruvian charm.
Vibe
The food world predicted South American cuisine would be big this summer - and with the first sniff of spring, the launch of Ceviche has more than delivered. With the Soho restaurant scene crammed with non-reservation, queue-round-the-corner, table-flipping establishments, it’s a welcome relief to relax at a pre-booked table and spend an evening working through the pisco-based cocktail list.
Flavours
Sharp citrus flavours dominate the ceviche menu, while main sharing dishes range from grilled skewers of rump steak or chilli chicken to a ‘classics’ list featuring Peruvian corn cake and mixed seafood rice with pisco. And then the desserts - oh, the desserts - pumpkin and sweet potato doughnuts with spiced sugar syrup and the extraordinary Lúcuma ice cream with crumbled alfajores. The piquant pisco cocktails complement the picking platters, and there’s a good selection of South American wines on offer. The only sticking point is the price - the little dishes quickly add up.
Décor
With not a Carmen Miranda-esque pineapple in sight, Ceviche captures a grown-up, pared down South American vibe. Retro prints, tiled walls and intimate high and low tables capture the mi casa es su casa charm Morales has created in this neighbourly restaurant.
Upshot
After a year of hard, tattooed, streetwise, New York-inspired restaurants sweeping through Soho, it’s a relief to book in a night somewhere warm-blooded with smiling waiters and good food. And anywhere that pumps out pisco is alright with us.
