Weekend Guide

---

We're not detox delirious this month. Instead, we're going for a moderate purge to achieve a healthy, quiet and "everything-in-moderation" January. So, this is what we're channeling this weekend: ramen and NY Italian on the food front, a decent flick, some menswear fashion and a spa for some downtime. There'll be absolutely no partying but a cosy Sunday beverage never hurt anyone, right?

AGENDA PICK

The View from The Shard

It's been a long time coming but we're less than a month away until Renzo Piano's masterpiece opens its doors. Tickets to the top have already sold out for the first two days so book fast. After two 30-second lift rides up (to a sobering 800ft) enjoy the 68th floor viewing gallery or go all the way to the outdoor balcony on floor 72. There'll also be guides and hi-tech telescopes to view the surrounding 40 miles, Big Ben and potentially your house.

FRIDAY

EAT:
Tonk The Disco
  FILM:
Jiro Dreams of Sushi

Two of 2012's most popular foodies join forces for Tonk The Disco. Tonkotsu and Disco Bistro will offer their take on Japan's favourite hangover food (NB for detoxers – it's healthier than ours). "The Smoky London" ramen includes smoked haddock, spinach and the compulsory half-boiled duck egg, while snacks include seaweed crackers and Rock Lobsta gyoza. We won't mention dessert but the cocktail is a Yuzu Tom Collins.   What can we say? Film is on our minds. Settle down at Hackney Picturehouse this weekend for a gastro-docu-film like no other. Focusing on the elderly Japanese masterchef Jiro Ono and his almost fanatical quest for sushi perfection, it also looks at his two sons, who will one day take over the three-Michelin-star flagship restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro. A quietly moving homage to a gastronomic dynasty. It's not all about Nobu.

SATURDAY

SWIM:
Bulgari Hotel Spa
  EAT:
Cucina Asellina

Clichéd yes, but if we must detox, we'll do it Bulgari stylee. Book in for a pumpkin enzyme renewing or skin radiance facial, salt and oil body scrub, chakra balancing treatment or go wild with a detox ritual (body wrap and massage). If you reserve any treatment lasting over two hours you can stay to use the facilities, including the sauna, steam room, ice fountain, gym and, most importantly, the gold leaf glass mosaic-lined pool. That's just how we roll.   Another New York stalwart goes into ME London this weekend. Cucina Asellina – younger sister to Ristorante Asellina in Gansevoort Park (based on the Asellina Taverna in Pompeii) – offers a well-priced menu inspired by classic Italian home cooking. Think wood fire oven-baked flatbreads, paninis, pasta (try the classic "square" spaghetti), antipasti and cichetti served against a backdrop of rustic terracotta and polished concrete. Plus they're offering 25% off bills until the end of the month.

The Hunting Cabin
at York & Albany

To complement this week's Collections, Seven Dials has launched a pop up to showcase new emerging menswear talent. You'll be able to see exclusive designer presentations as well as buy looks straight off the catwalk from this season's Brit pack: Alex Mattsson, Astrid Andersen (pink puffa please), Jae Wan Park, Omar Kashoura (very wearable), Matthew Miller, Bobby Abley and UJ fave streetwear-on-acid Martine Rose.   Don't go bone dry this January. Cosy up for an early evening tipple at the York & Albany's pop up Hunting Cabin on the edge of Regent's Park. It's all traditional tartans, skins, antlers, tweeds and hot toddies – think mulled wine, hot apple cider and a boozy spiced hot choc. Snacks are suitably comforting: duck rillettes, game sausage rolls and scotch eggs. Tuesday evenings add live music into the mix.
