Weekend Guide

---

We've got you running all over the place this weekend. Begin by going around the world, culinary speaking, at Street Feast; visit heaven and hell, metaphorically speaking, via neon signage and 3D opera; and try some "crack" sauce and "crack" pie (pseudonymically speaking…). Other than that, you could always shop some new sneakers, channel some Bowie or start some home refurbishments. And… the Beagle restaurant is finally open!

INTERIORS #1

House of Hackney

With Milan's Salone Internazionale del Mobile on the radar this week, we've got interior design on the mind. House of Hackney has just launched a new tree collection that maintains their British-traditionalism-on-acid feel. Go for the fern or palmeral series in wallpaper, lamps, cushions and sofas – or all of the above.

From £65, available from House of Hackney

INTERIORS #2

Versace x The Haas Brothers

Last year it was Marni; this year Versace is king of the chair. The Haas Brothers have designed a 12-piece collection for Versace Home, which includes a futuristic, honeycomb brass throne entitled "The Donatella Chair"; there's also "The Stud Club" and "The Bondage Bench". The collection will be on display until the end of the Milan Furniture Fair.

Salone Internazionale del Mobile, until April 14

FRIDAY

EAT:
STREET FEAST
  NEON:
I'VE LOOKED UP TO HEAVEN AND BEEN DOWN TO HELL

Street Feast is back for summer, this time pitching up on Kingsland Road. Old and new faces will be offering their take on street-credible nibbles: go for healthy gyoza at Rainbo, thai-fried chicken at Yum Jungle and Seychelles-inspired cuisine at Vinn Goute, washed down with some cocktails from newbie The Gin Store. Nu-school chef du jour Ben Spalding will also host a "Stripped Back" dinner on a raised dining terrace every Friday until the end of the month (best to book tickets for this, though walk-ins are available from 5pm-6pm).   Chris Bracey, the master of neon is back (we're still missing God's Own Junkyard in Soho) with his first solo UK exhibition on heaven and hell – a Jesus sculpture is just the beginning. Having lit up the stars for over 30 years, with commissions from fash-pack stalwarts (Stella McCartney, Martin Creed and Vivienne Westwood) and Hollywood big-guns alike (Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton), this retrospective will take you through 70s hedonistic London and back again. Bright lights, big city, here we come.

SATURDAY

SHOP:
DAVID BOWIE IS ALL YOURS
  OPERA:
Sunken Garden at Barbican

If you haven't got tickets for David Bowie Is until July, then get your fill at Selfridges' Concept Shop. Not only has the V&A contributed, there are also made-to-order prints by Brian Duffy as well as vinyls. The cult LA vintage emporium Decades has also curated a capsule collection (think Pierre Cardin, Lanvin, Céline and Alaïa from the 1970s), while Selfridges has put together its own up-to-date Bowie-inspired edit from SS13 (featuring Peter Pilotto, Mary Katrantzou and Rick Owens). Bowie-mania indeed.   The world's first 3D opera – this is not one for purists – combines live singers and onscreen holograms performing side by side. Sunken Garden was created by director and filmmaker Michel Van Der Aa and David Mitchell, he of Cloud Atlas (the book). The 'occult-mystery film-opera' focuses on a missing person and those searching for him in the space between heaven and Earth. Avant-garde opera: it's here to stay.

DISCO

Sarge at the Disco

Disco Bistro, the culinary radicals, are at it again – this time with a pairing of ying and yang chefs. In one corner we have Mark Sargeant, aka former head chef at Gordon Ramsay at Claridge's, and in the other, we have chef-of-the-people Carl Clarke, whose previous ventures include the NYC-style Rock Lobsta bar and the punk-Jubilee God Save the Clam celebration. Expect inventive dishes such as oyster beignets with pulled short ribs and the otherworldly cold chocolate and sea buckthorn fondant with crystallised sea purslane. Enough said.

BRUNCH:
DANTE FRIED CHICKEN X DEATH BY BURRITO
  SHOP:
CREPE CITY
SNEAKER FESTIVAL

THE king of fried chicken, Dante Gonzales, is back in town. This time, he's celebrating the launch of his new cookbook Ride or Fry: The Dante Fried Chicken Experience, which features recipes from his legendary pop-up food truck in LA. This weekend he's taking over Death By Burrito and on Sunday he's serving an "all-day brunch up". Chow down on toasted okra breakfast tacos and his signature sock-it-to-me chicken with apricot crack sauce, then finish with a white chocolate and black sesame potato pie. (And there's more.)   Trainer wearers/collectors/aficionados will want to get themselves to the Crepe City Sneaker Festival early, if the last event's queues are anything to go by. Browse the selection of hard-to-find kicks – old Liberty x Nike models, Yeezys, rare Air Maxes, Jordans, Deadstock Huaraches and ASICS that were never released in Europe. There will also be live sneaker customisation stations, streetwear brand pop ups, food, drinks and an after party. Kick it.

BEAGLE – Locomotive fun

397-400 Geffrye Street, E2 8HZ | 020 7613 2967 | @beaglelondon

Location
The latest foodie microcosm, Hoxton. The restaurant and bar is set in three renovated railway arches right next to Hoxton Station, and it's named after one of the old locomotives that used to run on the line above.
Vibe
Sociable, bustling, yet relaxed; this is the place to come to catch up with friends after work. Tables are close knit, waiters are friendly (the good kind) and you can peek into the busy kitchen. It's no coincidence that Kieran and Danny Clancy, otherwise known as the Krankbrother, are the driving force behind the restaurant. They've employed the same philosophy behind their parties to Beagle – a distinctive location, fresh music (in this case, food) and an intimate, neighbourhood feel. At the moment the license is until midnight, but watch this space…
Flavours
James Ferguson's menu is seasonal, hearty and homey with interesting, carefully selected – but not flashy – ingredients (bantam eggs, gubbeen, pig's head). Grill fever holds strong – two standout dishes were the straight-off-the-barby-style lemon sole with monks beard and brown shrimp, and the chargrilled quail with aioli. The braised meatballs with lentils were comforting, packed with flavour (lots of parmesan, we're told) and, rumoured to be one of the chef's grandma's recipes.
Décor
It's got all the makings of an East London restaurant so the brickwork and blackened steel features are nothing new, but the architecture trumps all. The space itself is very impressive. You can even feel the slight rumble of trains passing overhead.
Upshot
There's a coffee shop under the third arch.
