Weekend Guide
---

---

It's Thursday again. If the short week hasn't been long enough to recover from a raucous bank holiday, then take a step back this weekend. We're opting for cocktails (or naked juices) instead of partying on Friday, doing the Smithfield circuit on Saturday and enjoying some contemporary art and bottomless Bloody Marys and Prosecco on Sunday. Talking of Prosecco – we drank it on tap at new Venetian restaurant Tozi this week. Read on for the low down.

FRIDAY

EAT:
HOMESLICE
  DRINK:
STORIES BROADWAY MARKET

Our favourite nomads Homeslice have finally found a home. The once four-wheeled pizzeria has upgraded to a 50-seat bricks and mortar restaurant complete with an open fire kitchen. Expect the usual inventive slices such as artichoke and courgettes, white anchovies or bone marrow with spring onions and watercress, but with added accompaniments—beer, double magnums and our fave, prosecco on tap (at £4 a pop), yes please.   Following in the footsteps of rum den Portside Parlour and setting up home on Broadway Market comes Stories. The latest bar born from The Mothership Group (behind The Book Club and Queen of Hoxton), you can expect all East London trimmings, from their locally sourced bar food – think chimichurri panko chicken drumsticks, pigs in blankets and piri piri squid – to the alcoholic milkshakes, spiked (or naked) juices and fun cocktails. Shaggy Dogs all round.

Tickets sold tout-sweet (sorry) for this weekend but we have a pair to give away for Saturday night. To enter email competition@urbanjunkies.com. Otherwise, book in for their next installment in June.

SATURDAY

EAT:
CHABROT BISTROT DES HALLES
  DRINK:
THE BIRDCAGE

We thought that after the Brasserie Chavot and Balthazar hype had cooled down, it would be a while before we saw our next French bistro/brasserie – mais non. Chabrot Bistrot de Halles will be more brasserie than bistro, compared to its sister restaurant Chabrot Bistrot d'Amis. Dishes are Southern French – there's a large meat section (a heavy nod to Smithfield Market) and fresh fish grill – and the overall feel is classic, with brushed velvet banquettes and a zinc-topped bar. The wine list? A 70-strong bin.   Then a visit to another Smithfield newbie. If you haven't visited the recently opened home-away-from-home Bird of Smithfield, do so now. Not only are there all-day food offerings across five floors, but also basement bar The Birdcage. Sip on a Fresh Approach – Ketel One citron, lemongrass, ginger vermouth and limoncello fog – before ordering some bar nibbles such as crispy monkfish cheeks, quail Scotch eggs or the Surfin' Bird Burger (with lobster). If sunny, swap the subterranean den for the rooftop.

HOTEL:
POP CULTURE WEEKEND AT SOUTH PLACE HOTEL
  ART:
20|21
INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR

Hanging out in hotels – especially South Place – seems to be du jour at the moment. This weekend they're holding the first in a series of pop culture-inspired weekends. The first floor features new exhibition Lost Then Found, which displays unseen 35mm Andy Warhol portraits shot by photographer Steve Wood (they lay forgotten in a filing cabinet for years). There'll also be a pop up shop with rotating upcoming designers, as well as a monthly brunch with party. The best bit: bottomless Bloody Marys, Bellinis or Prosecco for £10.   Then for your fill of art. The boutique international art fair 20|21 will feature 60 dealers offering a host of paintings, prints, drawings and photographs at the Royal College of Art all weekend. While pieces from the likes of Matisse, Miró, Picasso, Grayson Perry, Hockney and Hirst will be available to purchase, there will also be up-and-coming (read: more affordable) artists. Splash the cash on a classic, or peruse the stands for the next big thing.

TOZI – CICCHETTI DONE GOOD

8 Gillingham Street, SW1V 1HJ | 020 7769 9771 | @ToziRestaurant

Location
Victoria, some would say, is not the place for a new restaurant. To put it into context, it's down the road from the scaffold-clad station, opposite a suspicious looking B&B and restaurant "Spicy World". Tozi is something of an anomaly.
Vibe
Tozi is in fact located within the Park Plaza hotel, but doesn't feel anything like a stuffy hotel restaurant – the separate entrance and fresh design are to thank. The crowd was a mix of fashion types, young guns and sophisticated older groups, as well as the odd few (we suspect) hotel guests. Everyone seemed like they were there to relax and take their time, Italiano style. And it does feel molto Italiano – waiters are charming and the voices coming from the open charcuterie bar and kitchen make it feel friendly, homely and authentic.
Flavours
Led by head chef Daniele Pampagnin, the concept behind the menu is cicchetti, otherwise known as small sharing plates ("tozi" means a gang of friends after all). The menu is big so difficult to steer – partly because so much of it sounds so good – but the waiters will help with your selection. The charcuterie board is a good starting point (mortadella, Coppa and ewe's milk cheese were standouts). We wanted everything from the fritti section, but settled for the fritto misto of Sicilian prawns, squid, crab and sardines, which were fresh, crunchy and served on paper. Pesci fans should also try the grilled swordfish, while meat lovers should go for the rich, slow braised ox cheek on wild mushrooms and potato. For all-out la dolce vita luxury, go for the buffalo ricotta ravioli in black truffle or the Venetian style scallops served in a shell. They are soft, chunky and doused in a crunchy garlic, chilli and herbaceous gratin. If you like limoncello, go for the berry millefoglie for desert. Finally, to drink: we went for the summery Tozi Spritz – fresh watermelon, Prosecco and soda with Aperol – for an aperitif, Prosecco on tap (the best) with our meal, and the Amaro Tozi for a digestif, a sugary, medicinal night cap served from a mini barrel at your table.
Décor
Grey tones, woods and marble dominate the dining room, which feels open and classy. Details like glassware, black and white photos, lighting and different chairs are as well selected as the menu ingredients themselves. We loved the open charcuterie bar with clay oven and full-sized, postbox-red, ham carver in full view.
Upshot
Cecconi's and Russell Norman – there's a new cicchetti kid on the block. And he's good.
