Weekend Guide

---

This weekend in London is all about 'hood life. We're hitting up E8 for some designer goodies, hidden bars and even a rooftop stint to Japan. For those wanting more of a French/Spanish theme, head south to SE1. But if you must leave the postcodes – leap, jump and bump over to the Serpentine Gallery (say hi to Mr Darcy for us) for some pop culture. And if you're planning your summer jaunts – NY, Miami, Ibiza and Gothenburg are where it's at.

HAUTE FESTIVALLING

Wildnerness, Latitude and Secret Garden Party

The festival circuit is well and truly haute-ing up. Wilderness has been doing it for a while with Ottolenghi, and this year's latest additions of Polpo's Venetian banquet and The Box aren't letting the side down. And, news just in, J Sheekey will be bringing their take on the classic fish 'n' chips, too (soggy festival fries no more). Other festival foodie pitstops to note: Rotary Bar & Diner is going lakeside for Latitude, Festival Number 6 has two AA Rosettes in attendance, and Bompas and Parr are set to serve up jelly creations at Secret Garden Party.

INTERNATIONAL PICK #1

Omar's New York

Omar's, NY's latest members' club meets restaurant, is a brownstone answer to London's Annabel's. Set inside a townhouse, and owned by New York party circuit maven Omar Hernandez – who worked under Andre Balazs at Raleigh, Miami, as well as stints at the Standard, West Hollywood and New York's Hôtel Americano – it's the first time he's flown it alone. The front, Art-Deco styled restaurant, La Ranita, calls Kenny Cuomo (of Per Se and Blue Hill) head chef – expect market-fresh American classics with a Mediterranean edge, like yellow tail tuna ceviche, surf clam with pigtail and sorrel and rotella with nettles, morels and yolk. For members there are extra, unique dining rooms, a library bar, garden and wine cellar. Most certainly the host with the most.

Omar's, opens today, 21 West 9th Street, New York, NY 10011

Last week we got our roller-disco on at Skate King's Cross. We shimmied to Monarchy and Solar DJs, filled up on sticky wings, burgers and blueberry popcorn from Disco Bistro, and rolled the night away in colourful skates. If you joined us for the launch, you can check out the pictures here. If not, head there this weekend for a repeat, this time with DJs Severino (Horse Meat Disco), Hannah Holland and Damon Martin (Disco Bloodbath) to name a few. Our laces are already tied.

SHOP:
Dalston Department Store Sample Sale

Behind This Wall

Dalston, not usually a 'hood attached to the likes of labels like Thakoon and Narciso Rodriguez, but this weekend the fashion-forward Dalston Department Store is hosting an underground designer sale racked with luxury goodies (Felder Felder and Preen will also be in attendance). Womenswear and accessories will have at least 70% off RRP (fingers crossed for the Phillip Lim 3.1 Pashli bag). And if you need some help getting lax with the credit card, there'll be a bar to help take the edge off.   Keep within the E8 postcode and head to the latest hidden pop up on Broadway Market, Behind This Wall. For three weekends, the bar will be serving cocktails from the classic martini to prosecco to the hipster-heavy pickleback, while DJs spin the one-deck policy. And if you feel like a snack, it's all about the oysters here.

INTERNATIONAL PICK #3

Pret A Diner Ibiza

To say we love a bit of White Isle action would be an understatement (our second Ibiza newsletter went out yesterday - just sayin'). News just in is that our favourite travelling gastronomy experience Pret A Diner is set to pop up on the Balearic Island for a one-night-only, private villa party. Expect food from sushi maestro Oliver "Ollysan" Lange, masterful cocktails, and dance-on-the-tables music spun by a 'special' DJ.

ART:
Sturtevant: Leaps, Jumps and Bumps at Serpentine
  EAT:
Matsuri

Giving the art world a bit of tongue-in-cheekiness comes Sturtevant's latest exhibition 'Leaps, Jumps and Bumps'. The 83-year-old's first UK retrospective is all a bit samey, literally – her work focuses on repetition and the 21st century phenomenon of image proliferation. Having spent her early career copying the work of Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns and Roy Lichtenstein (to name a few), she has been the subject of controversy and accolades: the showcase is a whirlwind of repeated TV screens, sex dolls and light bulbs with a soundtrack of interminable beats. This means one thing – #regrams all the way!   And now back to E8 via Japan as Dalston Roof Park is going Nippon. Hosted by Masterchef winner Tim Anderson, expect a foodival of Japanese street food – and we're not just talking about bentos and sushi. Instead, fill up onokonomiyaki, karaage burgers, savoury pancakes and green tea cocktails brought to you by the likes of Nanban, Chop Shop and Tonkotsu (and more). As for entertainment – expect drawing classes, anime, and even taiko troupes. Priority tickets have sold out, but tickets are available on the door—UJ tip: get there early.

SUNDAY

APERITIVO:
Pizarro Aperitivo Bar
  EAT:
Casse-Croûte

Keeping in line with our penchant for restaurant hopping, we say go South for a Sunday Bermondsey binge. Begin at Pizarro's new aperitivo bar, where you can sip on gintónicas, with basil, rosemary or cucumber, and pick from the new bar menu, which includes Gilda (guindillas, white anchovies and olives), mussels escabeche and tomato-topped octopus. Alternatively, head there at 10am for the new breakfast menu. Try the torrija – bread soaked in OJ, fried, and served with ice cream.   Then, a hop and skip down the road. The general manager of José, Herve Durochat, is behind Bermondsey's latest French bistro, Casse-Croûte ("snack"), which has just opened up shop opposite. And snacks a-plenty there will be – think authentic bistronomy dishes such as tête du veau, rillettes, macarons and clafoutis on a daily-changing menu, with an all-French wine list to match. Plus, in keeping with the intimate vibe of his former stomping ground there will only be 20 covers (they take bookings). Official opening is Monday but the rumour mill has it that they are hosting people this wek.

PRODUCT PICKS

Urban Throwback

Channel the '90s in typographical designer Peter Ceizer's wares – he was big on the 1990s skateboard scene in Amsterdam, and also has an exhibition in Colette at the moment. If '90s NY is more your bag, try Only's new line of tees (very The Wackness). Or, jump back a decade to the 80s with the Vault by Vans latest collection. Every year they bring out reissues of old designs and, this year, to celebrate their 10th anniversary, they're bringing out old Disney character prints. We love.

Only NY Bahaus T-shirt, €40
Peter Ceizer Chemise Sweat, €80 and Chapeau Hat, €5040
Vans Vault 2013 Disney OG collection, available soon from selected retailers
