The Culturist

London’s cultural highlights this MARCH

We've got a bit of everything for you this month (they don't call it March madness for nothing). There's a high/low mix with designer skateboards, or simply highbrow with a visit to the opera. Otherwise, there's a 007 car exhibition, BBQ, tapas and southern Italian cuisine to eat your way through, plus a fashion festival, too. If none of that appeals, you can always jet off to New York. Get ready, kids… it's going to be a big one.

EAT I:
STEVIE PARLE'S NEW RESTAURANT
. . .
Restaurant wunderkind Stevie Parle is at it again. Following the resounding success of Dock Kitchen, the young chef is heading to Dalston for his second venture. Backed by Jonathan Downey of the Rushmore Group (Street Feast, Milk & Honey), the restaurant will seat 100, and with leather banquettes and a zinc-topped bar, is set to inject a bit of grown-up dining into Kingsland Road. Expect dishes inspired by Puglia, Sicily, Calabria and Sardinia, such as sage and lemon veal chop or fish stew with couscous. The drinks are in good hands, with Street Vin maven Ruth Spivey creating an all-Italian wine list.

Opens late March
432-434 Kingsland Rd, E8 4AA

INTERNATIONAL:
BILL CUNNINGHAM: FACADES
. . .

If you're itching to get out of London, hop a flight to NYC for a dose of culture, courtesy of the original (and best) street style photographer Bill Cunningham. In 1968, The New York Times' beloved lensman embarked on an eight-year project to capture hundreds of period costumes around the city on his muse, fellow photographer Editta Sherman. The resulting gelatin prints (now on display at the New York Historical Society) juxtapose fashion with the urban landscape: think Victorian garb on the subway. If you can't make it across the pond, there's always the book.

SHOP:
THE BOARD ROOM
. . .
It's all about skateboards at Selfridges this month. The shopping giant's concept store is transforming into The Board Room, a worldwide exclusive, with over 50 limited-edition decks created by designers just for the occasion. Everyone from Stella McCartney to Dries Van Noten and Rick Owens has got in on the action – skate in to Selfridges to grab one before they're gone.

From March 6
400 Oxford Street, London, W1A 1AB

EAT II:
BRAVAS
. . .
St Katharine Docks is getting a dose of Basque flavour. Bravas, a contemporary Spanish joint from restaurateur Bal Thind and chef Victor Garvey, is throwing open its doors this month. It's all about tapas, serving up dishes like Iberian tuna tartare, Jerusalem artichoke canelone with Medjool dates and seared Mediterranean sea bass fillet with Donostiarra sauce. Drinks come courtesy of George Matzaridis (formerly at Hakkasan): Spanish wines, sangrias and craft beer tick all the boxes. There's also a massive terrace overlooking the marina. Now all we need is some sun.

Opens March 7 (50% off food until March 17)
St Katharine Docks, E1W 1AT

WATCH:
THE COMMISSION / CAFÉ KAFKA
. . .
Here's a double bill for you – and we're not talking the movie kind. This month, the Royal Opera House presents two debut operas from up and coming composers Elspeth Brooke and Francisco Coll. The Commission (composed by Brooke) is a dark tale of murder and revenge, while Coll's Café Kafka enters the surreal world of Franz Kafka's imagination. So pop the bubbly and put on your smartest threads: a trip to the opera is in order.

March 17-19
Linbury Studio Theatre, Royal Opera House, Bow St, WC2E 9DD

SEE:
BOND IN MOTION
. . .
The car-turned-submarine Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, the Rolls Royce Phantom III from Goldfinger and the invisible Aston Martin V12 Vanquish from Die Another Day… the cars in the James Bond films are just as much stars as 007 himself. Now, the London Museum is paying homage to Bond's vehicles of choice in the exhibition, Bond in Motion, featuring the largest official collection of cars from the movies. Expect to see 50 cars made famous in the films, including Bentleys, Mustangs, and even a tuk-tuk (from Octopussy).
. . .
Opens March 21
45 Wellington Street, WC2E 7BN

EAT III:
Q GRILL
. . .
The Fish & Chip Shop, Holborn Dining Room… Des McDonald is a busy man. His latest venture, Q Grill, aims to bring a bit of Memphis to Chalk Farm Road. The BBQ restaurant and bar has a focus on raw, grilled and smoked food like moonshine battered shrimp, queen scallop ceviche and St Louis cut ribs, washed down with US bourbons, whiskeys and cocktails. The Deep South theme goes beyond the kitchen to the décor, with Dixie-style booths, rough timbers and neon signage. Best of all, it seats 150, so fingers crossed the massive lines at The Fish & Chip Shop won't be repeated here.
. . .
Opens late March
29-33 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 8AJ

LISTEN:
THE PHILO FACTOR:
REINVENTING COOL
. . .
And now to a festival of a different kind. Less dance and more designer, the Vogue Festival is back with an ultra stylish line-up: think Naomi Campbell, Valentino Garavani and the Proenza Schouler boys, to name a few. Our pick? The queen of minimalism, Phoebe Philo, who's sitting down for a Q&A with Alexandra Shulman on the 29th. So if you've been wondering why Birkenstocks are suddenly everywhere again, this one's worth grabbing a ticket to.
