Halloween vs Day of the Dead? Here at UJ HQ, we’ve chosen Día de los Muertos – for which we have every type of party: in a graveyard, playhouse, restaurant, mezcaleria… and if you’re doing Halloween, try it the Dead Famous way. In other news: a new Nordic restaurant has opened, there’s a house party in west London, Lucky Chip has found an outdoor home, and there’s something smoking in Soho. Happy weekend!

EAT:
Smoking Goat
  DRINK:
The Little Yellow Door

Smoking Goat, a Thai barbeque and drinking den, is doing some interesting new things. Swap your usual Thai classics for more exciting woodfired combos – the chilli crab with coconut cream and salty curry leaves and coal roasted aubergine salad come highly recommended. Plus, being a drinking den, late nights are a focus – expect tunes via vinyl or DJs and, of course, a lengthy cocktail menu.   Now for a house party at Notting Hill’s latest pop up, The Little Yellow Door. The concept? A west London ‘home’ experience: expect boozing in the living room (experimental cocktails), home cooked (but not really) dinner by a ‘flatmate’, late-night snacks in the form of ‘leftovers’… and even a tree house out back. Oh, and don’t forget to bring a bottle (optional, but preferred).

EAT:

  PARTY:
SECRETSUNDAZE DEAD FAMOUS PARTY

One of our favourite burger pop ups, Lucky Chip, have gone permanent (but don't worry, they’re still keeping a residency at the Sebright Arms). Opening an outdoor restaurant at Dalston’s Abbott Street Carpark, they’ve got all the essentials covered: heating, weatherproof furniture, plus a menu of steady favourites: Kevin Bacons, Royale wit Cheese, and Woody Harrelson…).   If you missed last year’s secretsundaze Halloween Asylum Party – then you’re in luck because secretsundaze is set for another all-night techno fueled dress up. This year, its theme is Dead Famous – think deceased aristocrats, artists, politicians and movie stars getting down to some dirty beats of house and techno at the Oval Space – courtesy of headliners Rolando, Funkineven and Romare. Be quick, tickets are on final release.

Lobster, Lobster and more Lobster

Lobster, it never gets old. And now thanks to a slew of new openings, London is (finally) getting clawed up. First, try newly opened Lobster Kitchen and feast on a menu of rolls (from garlic and parsley butter to sweet chili with a spicy fish sauce), mac ‘n’ cheese, tails, and bisque. Next stop, Smack Lobster Roll Deli, opening on November 3. From the guys behind Burger & Lobster, here the main stars are the lobster rolls done every which way. And lastly, November will also see the opening of Fraq’s Lobster Shack. Expect a handful of east coast USA lobster dishes, a 30 cover eat in/takeout shack, and to spend about £25 a head with wine. Bibs at the ready!

WATCH:
Under the Volcano
  EAT:
Snaps & Rye

Now, that you’ve done your Day of the Dead rave(s), head over to the OXO Tower for the Mexican Embassy’s more down-tempo ‘The Day of the Dead Festival 2014’, a celebration of Mexican art and culture. In between all of the workshops and exhibitions, and of course, Jose Cuervo bars – make time to catch John Huston’s 1984 cinema classic, ‘Under the Volcano’. The Oscar nominated film tracks a day in the life of Geoffrey Firmin, a self-destructive British Consul who is positioned in Mexico during the Day of the Dead.   From Mexico to Denmark. Smørrebrød is in the air via new restaurant Snaps & Rye. The new Danish eatery and takeaway channels Nordic flavours thanks to the variety of traditional open sandwiches, all done on homemade rye bread with classic toppings (think house-cured herring and Rullepølse aka cured pork belly). Wash down a Smørrebrød with some Akvavit cocktails and house-infused snaps, or keep it simple and stick to Turbog.

VIRGIN Atlantic’s BIRTHDAY GIRL 787

#flightdecks

At UJ, we’ve been around the block a couple of times; we’re pretty difficult to impress. But when something different comes our way, we definitely take notice. Which is why when the Save the Date to be on the inaugural flight of Virgin’s new Birthday Girl 787 came through (destination unknown), we knew we had to be on that flight. Fast forward to the announcement that we’d be going to Atlanta to check out their new route to the southern hub, and that Rudimental and Gorgon City would be joining us for an 8 hour rave off (UJ is all about the party in transit! Boats at Outlook in Croatia, gondola to igloo at Snowbombing in Austria, and now planes!), and we knew this would be one for the books.

Check out how it all went down here, and be sure to search #flightdecks to see photos and videos that have been uploaded from the event. Book your trip to Atlanta now at www.virginatlantic.com.
