TOP 5

grilled cheese sANDWICHES in London

1. In Soho, we’re already fans of the newly opened Melt Room, London’s first toastie shop.

2. The don of melted sandwiches, Grill My Cheese, can be found Monday-Friday at Leather Lane Market. Grilled mac 'n' cheese melt, anyone?

3. It wouldn’t be a list without Sager + Wilde’s toastie and wine pairings.

4. Queues are down the road for Deeney’s Scottish melts, which include regional meats, cheeses, hearty broths and spicy haggis.

5. And finally, The Grilled Cheese Truck at Maltby Street Market is all about British Cheese.

Our eyes are on this number.   Blues, bourbon and soul food-inspired bar snacks: welcome JAILBIRD Basement Bar. A former police station, settle into one of the converted cells, listen to some southern classics and order from the southern-inspired menu of popcorn shrimp or jalapeno poppers with, of course, a julep or sazarac in hand.

SOLAR

Tart London, the name to know in fashion catering, has opened a bricks ‘n’ mortar pop up. Like the catering company, the focus at Tart's Kitchen is on seasonal ingredients and sustainably sourced produce from local farms. Attention to detail is key, from the ceramic Wedgwood tableware to the colourful food served. Open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, expect homemade granola, crunchy pulled pork noodle salads and sweet raw coconut truffles.   Pray for rays and head to Solar, Hackney Wick's indoor/outdoor festival. Head in early and pick from the street food vendors, which include Hog Roast, Jerk Shack, Carvery Shack and Pizza Surgery before getting down to the house and techno beats in the replica DC-10 hangar (naturally). The nose to tail supper club, hosted by Provenance Butchers and curated by Chef Cat Ashton (former head chef of Petersham Nurseries) at Paradise by Way of Kensal Green is, as you would expect, meaty. From the smoky bacon whisky old fashioneds and starters of crispy pig's ears to the pork belly main and even blood sausage for dessert (served with ricotta and sweet pepper ice cream), this is for serious swine enthusiasts only.

The Regent Street Cinema

The rooftop of Selfridges has, yet again, had another Des Mcdonald makeover. This time, it's been transformed into a Cornish fishing village, with festoon lights, a bleached herringbone floor and a retractable glass roof, if need be. We say sit back with a light salad or grill and a classic G&T – before continuing your shopping.   London’s first movie theatre has been restored to cinematic use once again. After decades of being used as a lecture theatre, the space – the ‘birthplace of cinema’ – has now been rejuvenated thanks to a multi-million pound restoration project. With art house, documentaries and student films, come here to get off the Hollywood track.
