FRIDAY

EAT:
Sesame
  EAT:
Leicester House

Having schooled us in Middle Eastern food, the director of Ottolenghi, Noam Bar, is moving onto his next venture: Mediterranean street food. Open all day, Sesame is based on the market stalls and smoking grills of the Med - think hearty salads, pittas and skewers. To kick off the opening, they’re giving 50% off big salads and filled pittas to all UJ readers from May 15-22 – all you have to do is show this newsletter. You’re welcome.   And for dinner, try some French-Vietnamese at Leicester House, the new restaurant at hotel One Leicester Street. The eclectic menu includes langoustines with ripped seaweed and rapeseed mayo, barbequed rump with dried shrimp, chilli and ginger and, of course, bánh mì with various fillings (our pick—the duck liver parfait). Refreshment wise, the mandarin mojito is a must.

Cannes Film Festival

HIGHLIGHTS

Hitting La Croisette this weekend? Aside from the films (Natalie Portman’s directorial debut, A Tale of Love and Darkness and Amy, a documentary about Amy Winehouse are on our hit list) it’s all about les pop ups. Stretch out on a sun lounger at Ibiza’s Blue Marlin before heading out to the 10ak pop up in du Cap for some after-house Vegas fun. For a bit of Parisian love Le Baron and Club Silencio will be flying the flag. Oh, and transport wise, Uber are taking to the skies via Ubercopters. Oui oui.

EAT:
Petersham Nurseries’ X Ducksoup
  PARTY:
Ricardo Villalobos at Fabric

Snap up one of the few tickets left for Petersham Nurseries’ first supper club of the year. Collaborating with Ducksoup, the menu may still be hush hush at the moment, but we’re told to expect four courses showcasing the season’s best ingredients, all served in the glasshouse café amongst the jasmine, citrus trees and freshly cut stems. Lovely.   The big one this month, with Cocoon and Ibiza icon Ricardo Villalobos joined by Craig Richards for a party which is guaranteed to be rocking until lunchtime. If you've never seen Ricardo in action, come and experience the magic this Saturday.

In a Sentence
By now you would have heard the hype, so finally, we try out east London’s first raw bar.

Vibe and Decor
Relaxed and unpretentious but with considered touches, from the antiques to the warm lighting and reclaimed wooden floor – we love it here. Laidback locals (i.e new gen Hackney-ites) are the clientele, and although it may feel like the kind of place for casual drop ins – judging from the buzzing atmosphere – a table booking is recommended. Or, do as UJ did and perch at the bar.

Flavours
Confession: on both our visits we stuck exclusively to the raw menu and starters – but we tried them all, and we’re already planning our next visit. The raw prawns drizzled in olive oil and lemon were light and fresh; tuna tartare packed a punch with its layers of aubergine and harissa and mint; and the wood-roasted beetroot salad with apple, caraway and goat's curd was the perfect accompaniment to the seafood. Don’t leave without trying the crab English muffins: warm, buttery and moreish. The cocktail list is boozy and refreshing. The White Negroni is classy, Damn Sons is fresh and the Sage Against The Machine has kick.

Top Tip
Get there early for oyster happy hour – we especially loved the Maldon Kumamoto variety, originally Japanese, but bred in Essex. Small, sweet and meaty.

Highlight
The crab English muffins will keep us coming back.
