FRIDAY

EAT:
Salt & Honey Bistro
  DRINK:
Brewer’s Bar

The highly anticipated restaurant from the guys behind Manuka has opened – and we like the sound of it. Salt & Honey will offer a menu with European and Australasia twists using British ingredients. Start with the brioche of foie gras, salt and honey before making your way through the mains of honey-glazed salmon with shaved fennel and pomegranate or the market fish with truffle mash. Dessert has to be the Manuka honey and saffron brulée.   A butcher’s shop turned watering hole, ohh Dalston. Keeping some of its past via the original red and gold shop signage, the décor here blends in vogue marble butcher’s counters and ironwork with reclaimed furniture, while the drinks list is concise and boutique – think Partizan brews from Bermondsey and boutique spirits such as 58 Gin & Tonic and Monkey Shoulder whisky.

Tuckshop Summer Carnival

Finally, west London gets its own food market. On the rooftop of the old BBC Television Centre is where you’ll find the usual suspects – White Men Can’t Jerk, Le Bun and Rum Shack and a host of other street vendors. Want activities? Plans for outdoor yoga, screenings and DJs are on the agenda. Rooftop, food, drinks and activities: tick, tick, boom.   Partake in festival vibes with the one-dayer Tuckshop Summer Carnival, celebrating their second birthday with a headline DJ act Little Dragon, accompanied by a host of other DJs and live performances (including The Menendez Brothers). Expect a 14-hour blow out of everything from hip hop and dirty disco to bass, garage, house and drum ‘n’ bass.

SUNDAY

EAT:
Farm Girl
  SEE:
The Car Man at Sadler's Wells Theatre

Stick to west London for its latest Antipodean café, Farm Girl. Head in for either an all-day breakfast of gluten-free berry pancakes and home made granola, or her lunchtime take on the BLT (which includes coconut bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomato, cashew cream and guacamole). And being Notting Hill, everything is washed down with superfood smoothies. As for us, we’ll be ordering the lavender latte.   Speed, greed, lust, betrayal… just your usual Sunday afternoon dance thriller. Matthew Bournes’s The Car Man reinvents the original Bizet opera, Carmen, as a film noir 1960s-style thriller with a twist: think car mechanics with fluid moves. Tickets are still available for the matinee. Be quick!

DO NOT DISTURB

The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa

A five-star getaway in tourist trapped Venice, during mid summer? This we had to see.

In A Sentence
The JW Marriott gets its own island in the Venetian lagoon.

The Vibe
We’re not big fans of chain hotels, but when we were invited to The JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa – on its own private 40-acre island – we were intrigued. For those not familiar with Venice, during peak summer, it can be a steaming hot tourist mess. So, a hotel slightly away from it all (a 15 minute boat ride to St Mark’s Square) – could be just the tonic. And we were right. The hotel is in its own world in the Venetian lagoon. Huge gardens, Venice’s largest spa, indoor, outdoor and rooftop pools, and a scattering of restaurant’s. And. Relax.

Rooms
266 rooms including 32 suites and one villa – this is no small show. Most rooms come with their own private balconies, but for those looking to go the next level, request a La Maisonette room. Think split level suites all with private patios and gardens and some with pools overlooking the lagoon. Or just splash out and check into La Villa: the two-bedroom retreat, in its own private garden with a pool.

Top Tip
The hotel’s regular boat shuttle runs every half hour from 9am-1am. We say use the hotel as a retreat during the day and take yourself to St Mark’s Square pre-12pm before the tourists descend and post 6pm when Venice's bacari start to bustle with locals.

Info
Rooms start from €395 (approx £278) per room including breakfast.
