Groundhog Day at The Old Vic

Strictly limited season 11 July – 17 September 2016

The same day again and again…and again. It must be Groundhog Day. For those not up to speed: It’s the story of Phil Connors (Andy Karl), a cynical TV weatherman who is sent to cover the Groundhog Day event, when he finds himself caught in a time loop. As each day plays out exactly the same as before Phil becomes despondent, but is there a lesson to be learnt? Will he ever unlock the secret and break the cycle?

Director Matthew Warchus, composer and lyricist Tim Minchin, choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell have joined forces with writer Danny Rubin to collaborate on this new musical based on his 1993 hit film. Andy Karl is appearing with the support of UK Equity, incorporating the Variety Artistes’ Federation, pursuant to an exchange program between American Equity and UK Equity.

EAT:PLAY:
Breakfast at The IvySwingers

The Ivy may be old but it’s up to some new tricks. For the first in its history, it’s finally open for breakfast. So, ease into your weekend, pull up a stool at the plush bar and make your way through the extensive breakfast menu, which includes eggs done all ways (there’s an entire section dedicated to them), super seed bowls, waffles, pancakes…the works. Wash it all down with a Morning Tonic (lemon, cayenne, turmeric, agave and vinegar mixed with sparkling water) for an added kick. Rooftops, junkyards, and now underground, it’s safe to say The Crazy Golf trend is still in full swing. This weekend, tee up at the one that started it all, Swingers. The new permanent site next to the Gherkin has all the ingredients for a good time: five cocktails bars, street food vendors (Patty&Bun, Le Bab, Pizza Pilgrims) and two golf courses over 16,000 square feet. Bermudas at the ready!

EAT:PARTY:
Brunch at Black Axe MangalSankey’s Beach Opening

Fans of Black Axe Mangal and chef Lee Tiernan’s rebellious take on the traditional Turkish mangal and ocakbasi: good news, it’s finally opened for brunch – and it sounds worth getting up for. Think crispy pigs cheek, hash browns and oozy spicy eggs, cocktails by Ryan “Mr Lyan”Chetiyawardana and a soundtrack of classic rock. Get in the mood here. Sure, we’re not in Ibiza, but if you’re looking to party with your toes in the sand, this is the next best thing. For its inaugural weekend, Sankey’s will be taking over Studio 338’s brand new open air beach installation – sand, wooden decking, cabanas, two beach bars, hammocks – with it’s first ever ‘beach’ party. Expect a killer electro line up with a barbeque and tropical drinks thrown into the mix. This is London-by-the-sea, well kind of.

WATCH:EAT:
Sundance Film Festival: LondonSmoke & Salt

Get off the Hollywood track and brush up on your art house and indie flicks with London’s Sundance Festival, held at The Picturehouse Central all weekend. Pick from the best of what Utah has to offer, but if we had to choose, it’ll be ‘Tallulah’, starring Ellen Page as a rootless drifter who kidnaps a baby from the kid’s trainwreck of a mother. A bit heavy for a Sunday, we know, but it’s a comic drama… so they say. Adding to the fray of excellent restaurants in Islington (Gallery Islington, Chinese Laundry, Bellanger, Oldroyd…), comes pop up Smoke & Salt. Helmed by young chefs Remi Williams and Aaron Webster (previously of The Shed), they’ve devised a five course tasting menu championing smoking, curing and preserving for an affordable £38. Sunday, sorted.
