Weekend Guide July 29 - 31

This weekend in London we have our usual bits, which includes our normal flurry of happenings from new restaurants and day partying to pop up shops and a last supper. But, as you know, we’ve also been suffering a case of island fever, so with that in mind, we’ve zoned in on an island further afield, Bali. With two new hotel launches, great restaurants and top DJ talent going through, we had to get over – and hopefully our finds will inspire you, too! Enjoy.

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI Être Cécile at Modern Society • SAT Krankbrother Street Party • SUN Rita’s last supper

TOP 5
ice cream sandwiches

Versions of ice cream sandwiches are everywhere at the moment, so here are our top five

1. Fried Horlicks ice cream bao, from Bao. Need we say more?

2. Or how about an ice cream taco? Find them at Xiringuito in Margate

3. If you prefer Middle Eastern cuisine, try an ice cream pita at the newly opened Berber & Q Shawarma Bar

4. You’ll have to be quick to snap up a fast-selling macaron ice cream sarnie from Yolkin

5. Or go classic with Blu Top: two cookies, your favourite ice cream in the middle and toppings on top. Simple but perfect

Cocktails and Craftsmanship

Katamama, Seminyak Bali

First up on our Bali list is Katamama. By the family that owns the ever-popular Potato Head Beach Club, this small, handcrafted 58-suite boutique hotel is for those looking for innovative style with their beachside holiday. It truly stands out as the understated luxe option on the Seminyak oceanfront ‘strip’. With bespoke spirits in rooms, rooftop views and handcrafted everything throughout, this truly was a standout stay.

EAT:SHOP:
Smokey TailsÊtre Cécile at Modern Society

Seth Troxler’s good times barbecue grill joint, Smokey Tails, is now open for breakfast. This means a serious heart-stopping menu inspired by Seth’s three-generation-old family recipe book, which includes beef brisket hash with eggs, Midwest biscuits with fried chicken and gravy and his take on the Mcmuffin (eggs, twice smoked bacon, Monterey jack cheese and homemade BBQ sauce). Olympic fever is starting to set in, and here at UJHQ, we’re getting Rio ready thanks to Être Cécile. The ‘cool girl’ brand helmed by Style.com fashion director Yasmin Sewell will be taking over East London’s concept store, Modern Society, today with its Olympic-themed capsule collection. To get into the spirit, we’re giving a UJ reader the chance to win a piece from the Olympic collection. Enter here. Go #TeamCecile.

Rice Paddies and Luxe R&R

Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Ubud Bali

Next it was over to Ubud. Opened in September, we stayed at Mandapa, Ritz Carlton’s third reserve property, set on the banks of the Ayung river and one of our most memorable travel experiences to date. Rooms that come with lap pools, jungle setting, rice paddies and a five star spa, it really – we think – doesn’t get better than this.

PARTY:EAT:
Krankbrother Street PartyClipstone

Nothing like a daytime shakedown on a Saturday, especially when it’s in the form of a Krankbrother Street Party. Closing down Clifton Street in Shoreditch, the DJ duo will be joined on decks by Leon Vynehall, Midlan and Gilles Peterson, and the party hosted by the fabulous Queenie Twins and their posse. There’ll also be food and drink aplenty to keep you going until the after party at Village Underground. Or, skip the after party and head to dinner at the newly opened Clipstone. Although, the second venture from the team of Portland restaurant, Clipstone is a more casual, ‘neighbourhood’ spot. Dine on light dishes of cold cuts, sourdough flatbreads, summer plates, and fresh desserts – we’re already won over by the sound of the lemon and sheep’s milk ice cream with extra virgin olive oil.

WATCH:EAT:
Impropera Opera Company: The Next FrontierRita’s last supper

For a dose of outdoor culture, head to Lewis Cubitt Square in King’s Cross for Cubitt Sessions. The summer of live performances spans everything from classical music, immersive theatre and surreal comedy to today’s dose of opera by the Impropera Opera Company. Head in early for a look around the new-gen King’s X… and perhaps even a dip in the pond? Ah, Rita’s – sake highballs, tequila drenched Cinco de Mayo celebrations and a moreish Americana menu – we’ve had some good times. But the time has come to an end. Tonight, Rita’s is closing for good. Head in for a last supper and don’t go easy on the menu. We’ll have double orders of everything, including the patty melt.

High in the Sky with Wi-Fi

Garuda Indonesia

When we were booking a flight to Bali, we were after one thing: the shortest route. And the flight that kept coming up was from Garuda Indonesia: 15 hours and 50 minutes, with only a 1.5 hour layover via Jakarta (or Singapore, on the way back). For this route, it was a fast ride. Business seats all had direct access to the aisle and Champagne was served in actual, full-size flutes (wahey!) and red wine in Bordeaux glasses (yeah!).
