EAT:WATCH:
Rum Kitchen Notting HillThe Little Orchestra at Oval Space

No longer just a Caribbean rum kitchen, Rum Kitchen Notting Hill – where it all started – has had a spruce up and it’s all grown up. The re-opened W11 digs includes a new brunch menu with a few health twists, such as build-your-own acai bowls and a smoothie menu. But the biggest change? The downstairs members’ bar, open ‘til 2am. Want in? Apply here and enter URBAN JUNKIES in the “PROPOSER” field. When was the last time you watched a live orchestra on a Friday night? Ok, us neither. But the upcoming concert by The Little Orchestra is changing our tune. They’ll be playing contrasting pieces by Beethoven and Barber back to back: think 19th century German symphonic power meets mid-20th century American fire, so they say. Plus, we love the concept: classical music in an unclassical setting. This one is at Oval Space.

Rest matters to everyone. Its presence, absence and quality affects mind, body, culture and society. Rest & its discontents is a major new exhibition exploring the dynamics of rest, stress, sound, noise, work and mind-wandering, in an evolving laboratory of artists’ moving image, performance, drawing, poetry, data, sound, music and debate. Rest & its discontents draws on Hubbub, a two-year residency undertaken by fifty international artists, social scientists, broadcasters, humanities researchers, scientists and mental health experts in The Hub at Wellcome Collection, led by Durham University.

Rest & its discontents, Sep 30 – Oct 30 (12pm-6pm Tuesday-Sunday, closed Monday), Mile End Art Pavilion, E3 4QY. For more information about the exhibition, visit www.hubbubresearch.org

SHOP:DO:
Red ValentinoWine Car Boot

If the fantastical all-pink interior of Sketch gets you excited then you’ll want to head to the new Red Valentino boutique on Sloane Street. Designed by the same designer, India Mahdavi, the interior is swinging sixties: curved walls, Rubik’s cube-like display stands and mod armchairs in a pink and white colour scheme. We like. Taste your way out of the supermarket at the Wine Car Boot Sale. This is your chance to buy directly from London’s best shops and producers from the independent wine scene. Brands include Noble Rot, Maltby & Greek, Berry Bros & Rudd, Craft London, St John and Bubbledogs. Plus, there’ll be a bottle tombola.

The refreshing mix of Bombay Sapphire, Bermondsey Tonic, peashoots, wheatgrass, dill with hints of citrus and salt is as complex as it is refreshing. Bonus points for the soundtrack the cocktail is served with. Yes, really!

DO:DO:
The London Design festivalOpen House

Today is all about culture, starting with the London Design Festival. Spanning dozens of locations and hundreds of exhibits, you need a plan of attack – and The Smile is a good start. The hardwood structure created by architect Alison Brooks is designed to look like it could start rocking, but is in fact motionless. So go on and step inside. Or, peek inside some of London’s most famous buildings at the annual Open House London weekend. Our pick? It’s a toss up between 10 Downing Street – if only to hopefully rub some political shoulders – and Vex, the spiral shape home (pictured) with its own soundtrack, integrated within and around the building’s spaces. This we’ve got to hear.
