SOHO GLOSS

Temper restaurant

Having long cleaned up its seedy reputation, the bright lights of Soho now shine for cafes, members’ bars and restaurants (even Balans has had a refurb!), and the glossi-fication is set to continue. This week alone, we’ve had the opening of the new WAH, a second Lobos, and new taqueria El Corazón; and that’s just the start. Make way for three heavy-hitters making W1 their new home.

Following a relocation to Dean Street from its original Frith Street digs, as of last Thursday, Barrafina Soho is back. The new site, located in Quo Vadis, may be bigger and better (increased capacity means smaller queues!), and there’s even an outdoor terrace, but the menu and chalkboard specials remain the same. Phew.

Next up is Temper, the latest venture from Neil Rankin of Pitt Cue and Smokehouse. All grown up, Neil’s bringing a bit of Dalston’s Turkish grill scene to Soho, with a focus on BBQ meat and some seriously interesting sides. If you’d rather a light bite, head to the bar upstairs for soy-cured beef and blowtorched mackerel tacos, washed down with a couple of mezcal margs. Right next to Axel Arigato’s shoe ‘gallery’, the exterior is suitably impressive, and puts the nearby Pret/Itsu storefronts to shame. Oh, and our favourite thing? You. Can. Book.

And finally, big news. Come February, The Ivy is set to open in Soho. Joining Temper on Broadwick Street, the new Ivy Soho Brasserie will be bringing its gloss to the neighbourhood via Manhattans and marble floor – though we hope this doesn’t call time on the bustling Berwick Street stallholders opposite. We like the hawker and haute mash.

Soho, times a changing.
