We love Borough Market

Across years of first dates, languid weekends, winter strolls and summer spritzes, we’ve grown up alongside Borough Market. We’ve watched it flourish into a hive of food, culture and discoveries. Now that the small business owners, bars and restaurants are able to open again, we say grab a summer evening by the Thames and get down there. Let’s do more than a retweet – let’s fill the market. What to do after your first round of negronis? Funny you should ask!

As a hothouse for London’s food scene, Borough Market this month hosts Eighty Six List’s four-week residency, showcasing the next wave of culinary talent in London. None of these upstart chefs have a restaurant, so each of these nights are a one-off chance to sample some of the brightest talents in the city’s food scene. Leandro Carreira finishes off the run this Saturday, fresh off his year-long pop-up at Climpson’s Arch in Hackney and now ready to preview the dishes from his upcoming restaurant opening this autumn with sommelier Cameron Dewar.

Away from the hustle and bustle of fresh pasta, espressos and queues for Neal’s Yard cheese at the main market, Michelin-starred Duddell’s has just announced it will be opening its first London restaurant within the historic St Thomas Church later this year. Before construction work begins, the restaurant, which initially established itself in Hong Kong, will host a month-long pop-up art exhibition in the church from 20th June, reflecting Duddell’s focus on its art programme. With the site set to be transformed by Soho Farmhouse designer Michaelis Boyd, Duddell’s menu will focus on hand-crafted dim sum and craft cocktails, set against a back-drop of museum quality year-round art exhibitions.

Further along the Thames, the city’s tradition for bankside culture will continue to flourish with the arrival of Sir Nicholas Hytner’s new theatre, The Bridge, in October. Having transformed the National Theatre’s programme, Hytner and his business partner Nick Starr have set their sights on creating a theatre to fit the demands of modern-day performances. The 900-seat adaptable auditorium will be the first theatre of this scale to be built in London since the 1930s, and has been designed to respond to shows with different formats; from end-stage to thrust-stage and promenade. Hytner’s Julius Caesar has already made its way into our iCal: the modern-day performance will be in promenade and stars West End heavyweights Ben Whishaw and David Morrissey.

Whether we’re catching world-renowned theatre, dim sum or the first previews from chefs on the rise, you can’t keep us away.
