Here we are, just a few short days away from the first of two long weekends this month. And as usual, we have food on our minds. After a recent trip to Sabor where we saw goat’s cheese ice cream with liquorice sauce on the menu, we’re on the hunt for interesting desserts. We haven’t made it in to Petersham Nurseries Covent Garden yet, but if the sun rears it’s head like it’s supposed to this weekend, you’ll find us there. Like the Where Chefs Eat book/bible? So do we – and the third edition is out now. On the dance front – if you haven’t heard DJ Koze’s ‘Pick Up’, listen quick! It’s an instant classic and sure to be heard across dance floors this summer – catch him at Printworks this Sat. Lastly, it’s Pacha Ibiza’s opening weekend. YEAH! Get in first to check out the major refurb, with Hot Since 82 on Friday night. Let’s dance! Happy three day weekend everyone.

South East On The Up

We’re looking at you, Lewisham

Hackney Downs, Homerton and Harringay get plenty of attention, so this week we’re going south of the river instead. With a new food market, centre for contemporary art and bank holiday festival, things are well and truly on the up for south east London.

Feelin’ Good

Time for a workout?

Summer is fast approaching, and it’s got us thinking about shaping up. If you’re thinking the same, we’ve got a few suggestions. Looking for a new studio? The newly opened DEFINE in Fitzrovia specialises in classes combining strength and cardio for a balanced workout, whilst MoveGB is a good choice if you’re always on the move. For yoga, we say head to new design-led space Benk and Bo in Spitalfields for some serious stretching (and a post-workout vegan croissant). And if you really want to take it to the next level? There’s The Kings Way, a nine-day-long intense detox in the Black Forest. Wa-hey.

Escape The City

A new rooftop dining destination at Selfridges

It looks like the warm weather might almost be upon us, and that means one thing: al fresco dining. Renowned Italian restaurant alto by San Carlo has taken up residence on Selfridges’ rooftop – the ideal bolthole when you need to escape from the crowds of Oxford Street. Head up for a drink at the bar on the sun terrace, or head into the restaurant if the weather turns (and it will). As for the food? Expect Italian classics – from seafood and pasta to seasonal salads and gelato.

Scott Hallsworth

After trying out his buzzy new Soho restaurant Freak Scene a few weeks back, we chatted to acclaimed Australian chef Scott Hallsworth about his favourite London spots.

Who is your chef to watch right now?
DJ BBQ is always doing something interesting, and I’m looking forward to checking out his new cookbook now the sun is coming out!

What’s your all-time favourite restaurant in London?
St. John in Farringdon has been brilliant since day one. I’d go there any time, any day.

What should we order at Freak Scene?
I recommend 3-4 dishes per person, and make sure you try the miso-grilled black cod tacos and the chicken-fried chicken. For drinks, start with a cocktail for sure, and we’ve got some special new world wines which work well with dishes across the menu.

The Weekend

Three day weekend! Three days means more fun. On Friday find us at the newly reopened Skylight roof terrace at Tobacco Dock, on Saturday we’ll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo by going on Corazón’s taco and marg crawl, and on Sunday it’s party time with David Bowie.

Bank Holiday Monday: Jam on Rye

Get down to Peckham this BH Monday

Looking for a bank holiday Monday party? We’ve got just the thing. We say gather your friends together and head to Peckham for Jam on Rye: a celebration of sound system culture. Expect lots of reggae, afrobeat and new wave jazz (including Reggae Roast and David Rodigan), and plenty of street food from Breddos, White Men Can’t Jerk and more.
