My Bubbles

The summer's en route, and you can practically hear the eager clammering for a glass of cold, crisp, refreshing sparkling, no?

The sleek new Crescent Champagne Bar that launched earlier this week is a prime example. Whilst they do make some rather lovely cocktails, their particular (and titular) USP is clearly heart-set on the ol’ champers. With that many potential Krug-quaffers, though, it's perhaps no wonder that they’re based in West Ken (I'm not saying Dalstonites couldn't afford it - but…)

So what to do if the Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs is a little out of reach for a Sunday afternoon tipple? Our beloved Wine Chap might regularly beat me with the “Prosecco-Over-Cava” stick, but if you've ever whiled away a balmy evening in Barcelona's wonderful Can Paixano, you'll know that free-flowing, cheap-as-chips (or cheap-as-boccadillos, in this case) cava is actually a byword for summer socializing.

And now, care of the Institut del Cava, today sees 20 of London's loveliest gastropubs start a summer campaign of 2-for-1 glasses of the lovely bubbly. El verano español just landed, amigos. And it brought a friend.

Krug quaffing in West Ken?

I mean, seriously?
Doubt your writers have ever been to West Ken. The Crescent was also forced to become a champagne bar when it didn't get a lap-dancing license.

  • Top Three Bars for … Experimenting

    {mosimage}

    There are certain moments in life when nothing quenches quite like a cold beer. There are those times when it’s a Martini or even a gin and tonic. But then there are those occasions in life when one really ought to live a little; to drink outside the box, as it were. Foams and infusions, essences and caviars, the drinks scene in London is in a very special place right now. Here our top three cocktail bars of the moment getting experimental on our tastebuds.

  • Vuvuzelas At The Ready

    {mosimage}

    Despite our World Cup defeat, we’re not lacking in spirit – but what to do with our now defunct vuvuzelas? We’re taking inspiration from warrior King Shaka Zulu this summer, with the hotly tipped launch of a massive new South African inspired venue – complete with sacrificial ceremonies and cudu on the grill. Toot toot! ?

  • Appleton Bartender's Challenge

    {mosimage}

    A big thank you to all the lovely UJers that turned out in force to join us at Floridita on Monday night for the Appleton Estate Bartender’s Challenge. Drinks were imbibed from three top-notch finalists’ bars, music came courtesy of the fantastic Jazz Trio, someone won a trip to Jamaica (not us, grrr) and who didn’t love the meaty pasties and banana-date puddings?

  • The Sky’s The Limit

    Summer sunshine calls for terraced entertainment, and sure, there’ve been a few contenders. But like a school-kid crush, we’re stuck on Shoreditch House, where our only bugbear has been taken care of by the crowd-controlling extension. So is there any alternative to the roof du jour?
