Cheap Monday
Cheap Monday kicked off LFW early, with a spectacular party at Behave boutique in Soho to celebrate their new limited customized jeans range, especially for London.
They’ve been busy bleaching, patching, sandpapering and drilling, to ensure no two pairs are the same. And best of all, the generous souls have priced them at a mere £40 a pair. Whoever said Cheap had to mean nasty?
UJ catches up with designer Calle Malmgren to find out more…
Where did you get your inspiration for the range from?
The look is really trashy and kind of heavy metal, which feels really good right now – kind of early 80s. Also, the whole DIY thing – like if you have a favourite pair of jeans, but they’re getting faded so you dye them yourself, or they break and you patch them up.
How have the jeans gone down so far?
It’s been great…I guess the price is something people like. And they’re customized by us, so it’s very personal. We put our hands on everything, we put a lot of heart into it, and I think people can see that.
If you could choose anyone to wear your jeans who would it be?
That’s a difficult question… I would say probably Jello Biafra [Dead Kennedys singer] in the early 80s. Or Henry Rollins when he was singing in Black Flag. He has this good-looking pair of Levis on, and no top – just a really old pair of skater shoes and some cool tattoos… If that was my pair of jeans I’d be really happy.
