Wine Chap's Wine Tips: September Q&A
WineChap kicks off a new wine-tastic Q&A series with Hawksmoor’s Will Beckett
Arguably the City's finest steakhouse (and coming soon to Covent Garden in November), Hawksmoor boasts an enviable winelist. It also hosts regular winemaker dinners – where you’ll hear no complaints about the quantities poured! Plus, their Monday WineClub allows you to BYO for a reasonable £5 corkage, and one Monday a month for free if the wine matches their monthly theme.
Will Beckett is the man at the helm, and unsurprisingly with wine writer Fiona Beckett for a mother, he certainly knows his grapes…
Q. So what’s the best value wine on your list at present?
A. The Cavaliere by Michele Satta at £45 is pretty awesome – great winemaker and a brilliant wine. City boys also buy a lot of Chateau Pichon-Longueville '95, which is amazing value at £130.
Q. What are your credit-busting alternatives to Puligny and Pomerol?
A. Easy: we just sell excellent Puligny and Pomerol at reasonable prices! There’s the Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2007 at £75 and Chateau Pomeaux La Fleur at £55.
Q. What digestif do you recommend after a heavy steak-tastic meal?
A. Either a British Apple Brandy like the Somerset Alchemy 15 Year or, if I was feeling really flush, an amazing cognac like Ragnaud Sabourin Paradis.
Q. Finally, what’s the most bizarre or irritating request you’ve had from a customer?
A. For the traders who often frequent Hawksmoor there’s always a deal to be had or a rule to be bent. Low and behold, apparently not happy about our £5 corkage charge, some smarty pants once bought in a Jeroboam of Chateau Talbot 1995!
