It’s not news that September feels like back to school: gyms are full, new clothes are bought and resolutions set. But somehow, so often, we look up and it’s January and we’re setting the same ones all over again. So join us in trying to intentionally make the time to follow through on things. One hour a day. Or a week! Whatever you can do. Make it something that’s just for you. This week we have a bit of a seasonal focus and news on destinations that largely start with M.
Have great weeks all.

 | | | | | Lobster Telephone by Dalí | | Shhhhhhh | | | After being recently accosted at a very nice restaurant by someone having a very lengthy, very loud conversation on speakerphone beside us… the Swedish initiative Stay Quiet especially resonated. It offers people the chance to apply for a free stay at a remote beachside sanctuary, provided they don’t exceed a 45-decibel sound limit, or their stay immediately ends. Maybe restaurants could take note of such a policy – no considerate volume, no table. Or maybe we should just take ourselves on a trip with Unplugged or Unyoked, which both offer offline cabins in nature – not a speakerphone in sight.

 | | | | | | Seasonal Dining | | | ‘Tis the season, it seems, for lots of great seafood. Cometa currently has a limited-edition menu celebrating line-caught Cornish bluefin tuna that will run as long as the season does, likely until late October. It’s also native lobster time, so find a roll around town, or Riviera in Mayfair has a whole native lobster pasta on the menu. Michelin-starred The Ninth is celebrating shellfish, with their single ingredient menu from 15 Sept-10 October. And for those who aren’t seafood lovers, over at KOL, their late summer menu focuses on sweetcorn, in a variety of ways (charred and puréed; fish-wrapped in corn husks; with corn caramel and popped corn for dessert), which sounds, in typical KOL fashion, incredible.

 | | | | | | Swan Lake, Sadler's Wells, 28-31 October | | Sponsored Listing | | One of the Company’s most popular productions in its repertoire, Swan Lake will return to London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre from 28 to 31 October. Featuring spectacular ballet, a sensational orchestral score, captivating costumes, and a much-loved tale.

 | | | | | | Barcelona | | Partner Content | | | After a quick trip to Barcelona, we can report: Barcelona is feeling great as ever. And there’s truly no better time than September to visit. As for where to stay, Ocean Drive has recently relaunched Hotel España, just off Las Ramblas and a two-minute walk to both the Boqueria Market and the tucked away creative neighbourhood by the Palau de la Música. The building is Modernist, with Art Nouveau details inside: rich velvets, ornate light fixtures, and sleek marble. There are 82 vibrant rooms, some with their own terraces with city skyline views; a rooftop Sky Bar for pool lounging/casual dining by day, live music and DJs by night; and their restaurant, Fonda España, is led by a 12 Michelin star chef, serving contemporary Catalan cuisine. They also have a cocktail bar, club, and skylight-lit lounge.

Also in Comporta, Experimental have recently launched their restaurant, Elemento Atlantico, in a venue that was originally designed by Philippe Starck and with a kitchen now led by Manu Buffara, who was named Latin America’s Best Female Chef in 2022, by World’s Best.

 | | | | | | Seasonal Travel - Northern Lights | | | Dining isn’t the only thing that’s seasonal. So many places are great in September, but this month also marks the start of the Northern Lights Season in the Nordics. The season runs September to March. Do your research as to where is best for September, and choose a hotel wisely, as you need somewhere properly dark/void of city lights – CN Traveller has some thoughts on where to stay.

 | | | | | | Soho River House | | | You’ve likely heard that Soho House is opening a new property 45 minutes from London, on the Thames. They’ll have bedrooms so you can stay over, but you can also, of course, easily access the property from London for a dinner/day trip. They’ll have a Soho Health Club and it will also have their first Soho House Racquet & Rowing Club – which is very 2026/27, and in line with the direction their Houses seem to be going (their Miami Pool House has closed and will reopen as a Soho Health Club, with a wellness-focused restaurant).

 | | | | | | Seasonal Travel - Wine Harvesting | | | September is wine harvesting season in several destinations (France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, California, Oregon). Need inspiration on where to go? This Relais Châteaux list of wine-focussed properties is a good place to start. Many let guests be part of the harvesting action, with special dinners and events, so look around, to find the right stay for you. Here are some ideas for vineyards in Portugal.

 | | | | | | News | | As we were in Malta a few times this summer, here are some venues for your radar.
On the hotel front, one of the most talked about hotel openings this year, Casa Bonavita, by the founders of The Rug Company, is in an 18th-century casa, in the quiet village of Attard, one of Malta’s historic three villages. With only 17 rooms and mountain views, this is where you come to hide away.
On the other end of the spectrum, in more populated places on the island, restaurants that you see in upmarket fiesta destinations such as Ibiza and Dubai are finding their way here, and it’s the Lifestyle Group that’s leading the charge.
In Valetta, they have the sleek AKI Japanese restaurant and bar in the heart of the old town. And in the party-centric St George’s Bay, they’re helping to drive an elevated push in a waterfront development, this summer launching TATEL (Cristiano Ronaldo’s Spanish restaurant), and TANVI, a bling Indian restaurant that London favourite Kricket consulted on.

 | | | | | | Radial and Fabric St Paul’s | | | Let’s dance! Radial is a new 250-capacity club and arts venue in Tottenham – the size feels perfect as an alternative to spaces like The Steel Yard. And in what feels like a very fresh collaboration, Fabric and St Paul’s have entered a four-year partnership, with the first concert set for 29 October. Stay tuned…

 | | | | | | Madeira | | After a quick trip to Madeira, where we spent five days at the Portuguese outpost of the North Devon retreat, Yeotown, followed by a stunning drink and dinner at two venues at Reid’s Palace, the Belmond property there – we’re quite taken with the island; read our reviews. And if you haven’t been already, we’d put Madeira on your travel list: it ticks a lot of boxes for a short break.
