Rock on

Classical music is a bit of a conundrum really. Most of us are not averse to it, many indeed are rather partial to a bit of Nigel Kennedy Fiddling on their Roof (garden) while chilling out from last night's rave excesses.

And yet, few UJ readers are likely to embrace the prospect of an evening centred upon classical music, with its preconceptions of boiled sweet rustling and Glyndebourne refugees checking status.

Enter the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) which promises a totally different experience at tonight's 'gig' at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The orchestra will play music (including compositions by Vivaldi and Bach) from the 1700s, in the style it was played then, with period instruments, and a more edgy, less polished sound. Tickets are a mere tenner and you're encouraged to clap, relax, and even swill beer whilst listening - there will even be a 'classic' DJ.

Last week of Breakfast With Mugabe at Duchess Theatre, Uta Barth at Alison Jacques Gallery, Road to Nirvana at King's Head Theatre and the Royal Opera's production of Cyrano De Bergerac.

It all sounds a rather splendid way to spend a Monday evening, and might even give those Norwegian death metal chappies a run for their money.
